Counsellors

I think I'm going to go and see our school counsellor tomorrow - I really need to talk to someone about stuff - but I'm really embarrassed, I think he'll think I'm just a stupid little kid with pathetic problems. Has anyone been to see their school counsellor before, and if so, what do you say to kind of get started if you know what I mean? I don't want to just go in and say, 'yeah, I was cutting myself last night. help me.' I'll be really embarrassed but I know I've gotta go...and I'm going to need a hell of a lot of courage tomorrow! But yeah, any advice?
He's probably heard it all before.
Suck it up.
And roll in the joy
Of someone to talk to.

I did go to my school counsellor... but tbh, I didn't like her that much and switched to private therapy for a little while... which was better. Just make sure you make an appt. if you need one, and just say "I have some things I need to talk about"... these people are professionals, and they want to help. Good luck... you'll be fine, and remember we're always here for you.

well if you have been cutting yourself, then you're obviously not just some kid with pathetic problems, so dont worry about that!
the counsellor will take you & the things you say seriously.

my suggestions for how to open conversation are simply to say "hi, i'm finding things really difficult at the moment and really need someone to talk to." and see where the conversation goes. you do not have to confide that you have been harming yourself straight away, as that isnt the problem. the things behind that are the problems. it is possible that a counsellor would ask questions such as "do you harm yourself" etc anyway, so you dont have to find any words other than "um.. yes"

best of luck!
Don't worry at all! The hardest bit is actually admitting you need to see one AND making an appointment, I found that when asked why I was there I just blurted out that I self harmed, and it was an immediate relief! I ended up chaning councellers b/c I didnt like her but the next one I have gotten on so well with and its fab!
Good luck!!
Thanks *hugs* that's made me feel better about going...
