Woolton / Ashburne Hall

Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me anything about either of these halls - I went to the open day on 19th March and really liked the buildings of Ashburne, but am a bit wary of the fact that it's all girls... is the atmosphere weird? Full of timid/over-studious types? Or is this just a stereotype?

Also was just browsing the website and realised that I forgot to visit Woolton, which is annoying having come all the way from London - So if anyone knows what this is like to live in, or has visited it-- what's it like??

Thanks v much!

Woolton was my first choice last year, seemed a very good hall, didn't get it though. Hulme was 3rd and got in there this year, and will be there next year as Hulme hall is pretty good.

Hey

No, the atmosphere here is lovely - it's a small hall, so we all get to know the porters, cleaners, and such like. As everywhere, there will be the "timid" and the "over-studious" (although I've yet to meet anyone who's over-studious ), but most girls I know here are pretty keen on partying - even the timid ones. I'm a little shy myself... but didn't let that stop myself making friends and getting out. I think you're right - it is pretty much a stereotype. I've herd plenty of these over the past year, and find you have to laugh at them...

...so for anyone out there who's still wondering - no, we DON'T have a curfew, nor is the hall managed by nuns

We do have lovely buildings - everyone I've brought back has commented on them, and some lovely huge rooms (although pot luck plays a factor here). Slight lack of style internally, but if you saw other halls, you'll have a good idea of how much worse it can get  We're fairly lucky here, I think...

The PGs (mixed, of course) provide a good balance - most of them are fairly studious (comes with being a PG), but anything other than timid. We can socialise with them, so bear them in mind - although you can block them out if you can't bear the thought of anyone over 21.

Frankly, the atmosphere is more affected by the size and type of hall than the people who live there - the advantage of a catered hall is that you don't have to get along with your neighbours as much as if you were in a flat together.

The one cavet is - the kitchens aren't great here. So if you're planning to do cordon bleu cooking here, I wouldn't advise Ashburne... otherwise, they're fine for cooking simple studenty meals.

Oh, and in case you've not worked this out... I'm currently in Ashburne, and returning to it next year

It's also worth bearing in mind that Ashburne isn't oversubscribed, so many of the people there will have been allocated the hall after failing to get other Fallowfield choices - they didn't choose to be single sex, and therefore won't fit ANY stereotype.

Slightly obvious point, perhaps, but bears making.

Thanks for the info Princess Ana, very useful!
I really liked Ashburne when I visited on the open day, but I have a question- with it being single sex can guys stay over in your room? In some other Unis I've noticed they have certain rules (especially in single sex halls), so I was wondering what the position in Ashburne is.

Ashburne's catered, so you won't need to cook much... except for on the weekends when no meals included.
By the way, the accommodation book says "cash cafe" on the weekend... how does that work?

Same as for any other guest (I'll look the rules up in a second), except that they're supposed to be sensitive about using the bathrooms (given that many girls might not appreciate stepping out of the shower to find a half-naked bloke in the bathroom ). Theoretically, they're not supposed to use the showers, but, like many silly rules, that's impossible to enforce.

I've never been, but it's just what it says - cheap pay-as-you-go arrangement in Owen's Park. They do do some very good deals on the weekly specials, but most of the menu stays the same. You should have been given a menu on the Open Day, if you looked round OP?

Hiya,
Im at woolton.. I didnt it visit on my open day.. I had picked dalton ellis and hulme as my choices after i visited them but then browsed the net and put it down as my first choice.. and I havent regretted it. Its gorgeous, the room's are a really gud size, the toilets r fine, the food is standard. But the whole hall is quite small..so everyone is quite close. The JCR is cheap and very friendly..Come to woolton  xxx

Annik,
what are the en-suite rooms at Woolton like?
I know there aren't many but are they nice or a bit skanky?

Emily,
try wooltonhall.co.uk. I found what some of the people on there said quite useful. It's a message board from last September before people moved into Woolton. Some of the students who were already there say some useful things about what to expect.
