Work experience in finance industry

Hello all,

I am looking at the possibility of trying to find work experience next summer (2007) which will allow me to demonstrate that I have commerical awareness. I realise the obvious choice is to apply for summer internships, something that I intend to do. However I am not that fussed about earing and would be prepared to work on a voluntary basis. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good places which offer this. Leftfield suggestions are good.

Cheers
Thank god......we are both in the same situation as eachother!! I am having the same problems as you mate!! Have you had any luck?

How about demonstrating some research skills?

Start cold calling firms. Or I hear "Hays at UBS are recruiting for first year university students to work for free", or something along those lines.

Dont you think posting on here already suggests some kind of research skills are being employed?

Its not just about cold calling and knowing about where the opportunities are, its also about how to take advantage of those opportunities or generate them for yourself. These skills are not so easily acquired by someone without any experience already! Dont you think it would be better if those of us who do feel able to help and can use our experiences to give someone a helping hand is far more constructive than being blunt with someone? Whats the point in posting otherwise? Are you adding value to the thread?

Ill give some of my advice. The best way to find work experience is to exploit family connections, particularly if you arent bothered about getting paid. Ask around to see if there is anyone who might take you for say a week and let you work shadow them or else do a few of the dogsbody jobs. While you are there, try to take as much in as possible and ask questions about what things are like. If you make yourself useful enough you may be given a chance to get involved with things, but really the exposure is the best part.

Another way is to sound out possible companies who would do work experience. As a general rule, small companies dont have the time or resources to give work experience and large companies already have official channels such as internships (dont let this stop you as connections and persistance in applying can get you some good roles - i know someone who got 2 weeks work experience in Goldman Sachs after sending off a really good cover letter and CV. Bear in mind he wasnt doing anything exciting, but the experience was great.) Make a list of all the possible local companies who might offer work experience by doing a google search or using the yellow pages. Tailor a cover letter to each one and enclose a CV. The main thing to do is to say that you are eager, hard working and keen to learn and that you dont mind giving up a week of your time free in return for some experience. Mention skills that you have that could be relevant to the company, such as accounting or graphics skills. Just apply to as many as possible. Usually you might get an offer from say 1 out of every 10 applications.

Make sure you know what commerical awareness means to you. Are you happy to gain it through a finance firm or say an advertising firm? Think about what type of companies you are interested in and then target those companies more specifically.

Pogel: What you wrote was just a more polite version of what I wrote.

Posting for work exp on an internet forum is a very weak form of research IMO and I doubt many people will reply with a list of firms that take 1st year/a level students.

To OP: Get your phone out and start cold calling. Cold-email. Use www.upmystreet.com

I worked my ass off to get all of the work exp I have accumulated, on my own with no contacts, just a phone and email- so why should I make it easier for some Joe Blogg who was in the same position as I was? You get nothing for nothing in this world.

And yes Pogel, I do think I added value to this thread and add value to this forum in particular.

Side question to anyone:

Do you think its possible to gain experience during term time (working for free that it) ?

im 16 but my friend who is also the same age got a interview with UBS and she has had no work experience in the financial field. If you just send ur CV and covering letter saying why ur a suitable person for that company you should be able to get some positive feedback 4m them and hopefully a job. Good luck.
To be honest, UBS seem overly nice about dishing out work experience to lots of random people. A number from disadvantaged local schools come-by and every so often and intern gives them a tour of the floor as it were.

It's kind of embarassing for the intern when one of them goes up to someone and blurts out 'how much do you earn' and then finishes it all off with 'do you think I will get in, I've got CCC at AS level'. Maybe the person has got something in there which will make it work, I don't know, I'm going off what a tour person has said (not done one myself).

But yeah, deep down, UBS are generous about that kind of thing. But I still don't think it really adds value to you or allows you to show yourself off.

There are opportunities within your school or uni to show you are amazing. And you can certainly create those opportunities and fill them yourself.

If you're finding it hard to find something about yourself to 'sell' to someone, I think it's fair to say that you're going to find it hard to get into the industry and persuade people you are the person they want to work with.

Times have changed, I wouldn't get your hopes up too high about getting random work experience at places like UBS
Then what other firms could I get work experiance? And what can one include in the letters?
