It is usually related to something (such as depression). If it is that then yes, doctor may be able to help.

i agree, it would help to find out whats making 'you' do it, i.e low self esteem, stress....it can lead to other disorders i.e bulima, or starving yourself, so really be caredul, eating disorders are evil and can really mess up life!

binge eating disorder is classified as EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified) so, yes it is an actual eating disorder that you should get treatment for. also, as said above it can lead to bulimia and is linked to depression etc
Don't mean to hijack thread sorry, just I've been kinda worried recently, I've always had a big appetite and don't put on weight but in the last few weeks I seem to continuoulsy binge eat, and its all junk food mostly at night. I had depression until early this year and feel I'm slipping back into it, this binge eating is making it worse and I know I should stop eating but it's hard :frown:

diagnostic criteria...
Recurrent episodes of binge eating. An episode of binge eating is characterized by both of the following:
Eating, in a discrete period of time (eg, within any 2-hour period), an amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances;
A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (eg, a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating).
The binge eating episodes are associated with at least three of the following:
Eating much more rapidly than normal
Eating until feeling uncomfortably full
Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
Eating alone because of being embarrassed by how much one is eating
Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or feeling very guilty after overeating
Marked distress regarding binge eating.
The binge eating occurs, on average, at least 2 days a week for 6 months.
The binge eating is not associated with the regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors (eg, purging, fasting, excessive exercise) and does not occur exclusively during the course of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.

if that applies to you then you should go and see a doctor
binge ating is definatly some thing you should talk to you family and/or the doctor about. EDNOS is serious

I have just spent the last 10 weeks in an eating disorder unit in bristol and can confirm that binge eating is definitely an eating disorder. There were only 6 of us on the ward (maximum capacity) but there were two people out of those whose eating disorder centered around binge eating.

Funny you list "food" as an interest in your profile. Anorexic or bulimic? (I'm anorexic). You're also very pretty, the kind of girl everyone wonders why on earth they have an ED.
