Oh, I'm not scoutmaster - I'm a Guide, for starters! I'm just a normal member.

Just wanted to add: most of my friends (and myself) applied directly to New Hall. I'm so thankful people generally grow out of asking "oh were you pooled?" by the second year (I'm in my third year now so have had two blissful years of people just accepting New Hall as it is!).

We had a vote in the first year about whether we should become mixed or remain single-sex and I voted for remaining single sex. I doubt we'll remain a female college for long now. My matriculation and graduation photos will be a marvel one day... (all girls at uni?! whaaaaaat?)

So you weren't pooled? Are you sure? :p:

this has got to do with the oldest historical reason that the church , the Nuns use to impart education to the wards, and the finest convents are also finest girls schools,:

Reply 83

What exactly are you on about? Isn't New Hall a secular college without a chapel anyway?

.

Incidentally out of the dozen or so Newnham/New Hall girls I've met none have applied there -- in fact, they've all been quite keen to say early on that they were pooled, it's a "I'm not weird, I didn't actually want to go to a single-sex college" idea which they want to make clear!

well i know for a fact that you've met me, and i applied to newnham

How come males outpreform females as you claim in oxford, when girls outpreform boys in highschool?

that is a baffling mystery

This is not true.

Firstly, St. Hilda's is rarely in the 'bottom 3' Norrington table positions. Bottom third, yes, but not always.

Secondly, statistical evidence shows it largely *is* men pulling up the scores in other colleges. Men get far more firsts relative to women than you might think (in Oxford at least), and in certain subjects (English at St. Hilda's, for example) students at female colleges frequently get not only the best women's results but the best results overall of any college.

Thirdly, it is indeed the case that male dons outnumber female dons at both Oxford and Cambridge, and this is itself an argument for the continued existence of women's colleges. However, this does not mean that academics based at women's colleges have any less 'eminence' than fellows of mixed colleges; I could name reams of female academics in women's colleges who are at the cutting edge of their fields.

Finally, posting unfounded speculation like the above can easily affect the perceptions of potential students who read these boards, so please think and check your facts before posting in future.

My information was based on the 'well researched' (according to one broadsheet national newspaper I cant remember) book 'Oxbridge entrance the real rules, by Elfi pallis, who states that 'those with academic ambitions should know that women at mixed colleges tend to get more firsts than those at women's colleges' ...'also the old catch-22 problem remains, as fewer women are eminent enough to be involved in the setting of exams, fewer of their students get the best possible exam preparation'...'the outcome is that exam results are middling at best. St Hilda's languishes towards the bottem of the Norrington table'

Apologies for any innaccuracies, but if what you say is true there are much more influential people using these 'incorrect' facts and figures than my little post.

Yes, but Elfi Pallis' book is a pile of ****e. The research is non-existent, the text is often wrong, and the analysis is moronic.

Very true. It's littered with typos and factual errors, and a lot of the analysis/commentary is pretty dodgy.

Reply 97

The analysis/commentary I agree has caused me to burn the book twice before actually getting to the end of it-blasted left-winger with apparantly no insight into any class whatsoever. However, I was led to believe that research was its strength.
