Fingernail problem - ouchie :(

Right so for a few days my right-index finger has been hurting, and I decided this morning that it must be where i've cut the nail too low and its growing back but into the finger itself. So i decided i'd use a bit of homemade healthcare, and started to chop away at my finger with some nail clippers (yes I am a pillock), and when I pulled back the nail at the very side, this green fluid came out of the gap  So i got rid of all that and put a plaster on it, and it doesnt hurt now, but what was that green fluid? And should I be worried that I have only cured it temporarily?

As always, any help would be much appreciated

Oh god reading that made me cringe! :p:

when I was younger the skin under the nail was cut somehow and my thumb filled up with pus to the point that it actually swelled to about twice its size and went white. I kid you not. It was the most bizarre thing ever. I went to the doctors in the end and they popped it, then I was on antibiotics for about a week.

So keep your finger disinfected, whatever you do!
