Apron or Tabard?

Hi, I have just got a job stacking shelves in my local supermartket , im working on Non Food, the lady who interviewed me asked me if I wanted an apron or a tabard as the section is quite dirty (it's washing powders and stuff). Im just wondering what would be best, a lot of the females on the section wear aprons which cover their whole body but I am only small so I think a tabard might be better for me! as I think I might trip over the apron!

What do you think?

You've already answered the question! A tabard is more safer, at least you won't trip over it.

tabard is best, least you won't look like its your first day at school, having stuff thats too big for you!

The only thing is with an apron it covers the whole of me, and a tabard only covers the top half!

See if you can try them on for size - the apron would protect more of your own clothes, but theres not point having that if its miles to big on you. Ask what the smallest sizes are and try it on.

The apron and tabard are "one size" as far as I know, I started this morning and I opted for a tabard anyway.

How are you getting on with your tabard? Most of the girls in my branch choose tabards as it can be harder to walk in a full length apron. Tabards cover your back and sides better and its really your blouse you want to protect more than your skirt. But neither the apron or tabard protects your sleaves. Only problem with a tabsard can be if its too big and it falls off one shoulder all the time making you all lop-sided.

Does anyone else wear a tabard in supermarkets/shops on here?

Surley if you were given tabards - you should wear them, they would have not given them to you to keep in your locker!
Even the senior staff don't wear them- seriously they do look ridiculous and the uniform is bad enough already! Boots is so disorganised that they probably can't even remember who was given a tabard never mind who actually wears them!

A friend of mine has just started working at our local boots, when she was given her uniform she was told that she has to wear a tabard as she is an operations assistant.

She asked why and she was told it is to protect your uniform, she has a blue polo shirt!

Her uniform now consits of:

1 white tunic
2 blue ops t shirts
2 tabards
2 trousers

I'm also an operations assistant but for some reason I was given a white top (looks like a nurse's uniform) so it is always filthy- was probably so they justify putting me on tills when they are short staffed (which is all the time!!)

Don't get me wrong I don't hate Boots and there are worse jobs but my store is super disorganised and it gets on my nerves

God! Our manager makes us wear tabards, all staff have to wear them, in my store they are sooooo strict about these!

I'm an Ops Assistant at Boots and we all have the white tunics to wear and they are really hard to keep clean. We also get tabards to wear on top, not many people wear them but I have one on most of the time. My manager doesn't like us wearing them too much on the shop floor but they complain if our tops are a mess.

Its not much of a problem to wear a tabard, although they don't look great you forget you have it on after a while. Theres been a few times when I have spilt things and been glad I was wearing one.

We didn't wear tabards with our old uniforms which we had until about a month ago and they were an absolute mess. By the end they were grey rather than white and had lots of stains on them not to mention all the caught threads. If a tabard keeps the new uniforms in good condition then its worth wearing one!

 I help out at a hospice on Sunday afternoons. Our duties comprise taking a tea and coffee trolley round the patients and some chatting as we go, but most of the work is clearing up after the meals, washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchenette. We are provided with a blue tabard which I quite enjoy wearing. It's necessary to wear some kind of protective clothing in the Patient areas, and if we didn't have a tabard, I would wear a pinny to keep my clothes clean whilst working. We get a clean one each time so we don't have to look after them. The washing up machine is so hot that we need rubber gloves to unload it. Mine are blue to match my tabard.

At my branch everyone on the shopfloor wears one.
OIk, so don't laugh, but what is a tabard?

Hi Christina,

A tabard is an apron with a front and back that you pop your head through. It is open at both sides but fastens at the waist with either tabs with press studs or ties. Many of them have a central pouch type pocket to the front, but that mostly depends upon the job that the wearer is doing.

Morrisons girls wear maroon ones (with an inset printed panel) on checkouts.

I have tried to add an attachment to illustrate. Hope this works!
