What's AC100?

Elements of Accounting and Finance
Dave I was thinking, if you did want to do maths next year but didnt fancy the linear algebra then you could always do the MA200 half module and then half a module of something else?

One of the striking things I realized is that some of my friends want to take AC100 next year as their option...and for them it counts as a full module. Whereas for those of us who took it in the first year, it counts for 1/3...kinda strikes me as unfair??? AC100 is by far the easiest module I've done so for it to be worth the same as Principles of Finance (module-wise)...

hmm...

(or am I missing something?)

Yes quite true. I actually wish I hadnt taken AC100 in the first year. But Principles of Finance is not as easy as AC100. At least Dassios said it is "slightly difficult". I'll choose SO107, coz I want to do something different than the regular econ/maths/stats, and this is probably the only time that Actuarial Science students get to choose an outside option.

um..i don't think i am allowed as i have to it says calculus AND linear algebra under the course options list :frown:

i don't need to decide until september, so nearer that time let me now how u did in the exam and then i will decide

Ah right that sucks. No problems, i'll let you know how I did when we get the results.

Just wondering, how essential is econometrics, especially if you want to continue with economics after undergrad, ie masters etc? It's not compulsory for me (joint course) and everyone seems to avoid it like the plague, can I get away without doing it? hmm

Lol, is it that awful ?

I took SO107 this year so just a word of caution: While most of the lectures are interesting, the reading is extremely boring. I took this course (same reason...wanted to do something different...blah blah) but I didn't enjoy it at all. Have a look at the reading list (it's all there in the public folders) and see if it you like it.

Go to the intro lectures next year, Dr. Franks does the first 5 lectures or so and he's very good. The rest of them are ok. My teacher's crap as well..So good luck if you get her.

I'm taking AC100 next year so hoping for an easy ride. Especially since I've done Accounting at A level.

Good for me...It counts a lot more!

One question: How can a module count as a full module at one year, but only 1/3rd of a module at another?

The way the system at LSE works is your best 3 modules from the first year make up 1/9 of your overall degree, and the other 8 modules you do all count as 1/9 too. So basically it means that if you get a 2:2 in your first year, it doesn't make a big difference as long as you work harder in the next years. Its because, from what i've heard, most uni's dont have exams in the first year, so there's no point putting a substantial amount of pressure on you so early.

Hmmm I don't get it.

You take 4modules/yr at LSE right? And I always thought your degree classification is only decided solely by your 3rd year finals?

In addition if you say that the best 3 modules in the 1st year make up 1/9th of the degree, surely its more sensible to do an easy module like AC100 then? Since you could probably ace it with flying colours.

Na you've misinterpreted what I said. Your do four modules a year:

Y1
Y1
Y1
Y1 now from these four, the best three are selected, averaged, and that = 1/9 of the degree

Y2
Y2
Y2
Y2

Y3
Y3
Y3
Y3 from these 8, they are all taken and = 1/9 of the degree

So 8/9 of your degree is made up of all your modules from the 2nd and 3rd years, whereas your entire first year only makes up 1/9.

I'm away for the rest of the day now, so it'll be midnight or so before I can help any more

Alrighto. Where does the the remaining 7/9 of the degree come from then?

1/9 from your 1st yr modules, another 1/9 from your 2nd and 3rd yr modules (deducing from your statement "from these 8, they are all taken and = 1/9 of the degree"), and the other 7/9?

Thanks in advance.

Lol no. I think he means each one of your modules in years 2 and 3 is worth 1/9, adding up to a total of 8/9 with the remaining 1/9 coming from the fisrt year.

Ollie : econometrics (is it so awful ?)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh now that makes sense.

Alright, I'll definitely be picking AC100 up in my 2nd/3rd year.

Advice from the seniors is invaluable.
