Cannabis and Amotivational Syndrome

I have smoked weed for years now, and dabbled in other drugs too, as well as drinking quite alot, but I have been thinking about when I was younger and worked hard at school, in contrast to now where I can't concentrate, miss essays etc.

I researched it and found this:

http://www.druglibrary.org/SCHAFFER/hemp/amot1.htm

Particularly this part:

the _amotivational syndrome_, whose symptoms are:

"... apathy, loss of effectiveness, and diminished capacity or willingness to carry out complex, long-term plans, endure frustration, concentrate for long periods, follow routines, or successfully master new material. Verbal facility is often impaired both in speaking and writing. Some individuals exhibit greater introversion, become totally involved with the present at the expense of future goals and demonstrate a strong tendency toward regressive, childlike, magical thinking[1]."

These symptoms are pretty accurate in describing me now, as opposed to before I started smoking. Now i'm worried that I will forever be doomed to this limbo, whereas before I simply thought it was my own decision to act like this - rebelling, but now that I've grown up, I still can't motivate myself or plan ahead etc, I feel like I'm in a dream constantly, but one that I can't escape.

What can I do? Is anyone else in this situation because I've recognised it in some of my mates (who have since given up).

My boyfriend is like that. Since his mother died he has gone downhill. His loss, combined with drinking and weed, has lead to those symptoms. He is now almost a diffarent person compared to when I met him two years ago.

The same happened to me, (although not as bad as my mum dying) my girlfriend dumped me and I screwed up my exams and started smoking weed. I'm only starting to realise the implications years later. I also found this quote:

"It makes great people average, and average people dumb -- and causes more organic brain damage than any other drug of abuse except perhaps PCP (angel dust) or the end stages of alcoholism."

Dr. Robert Gilkeson, Neurologist and Brain Researcher.

This website also says that the brain cells killed by weed can not be replaced, so I guess it's permanant.

-Smoking weed is great fun up until you realise you've ****ed your own personality and brain up.

Well I did read another website which claimed that amotivation wasn't caused by heavy cannabis abuse, but that heavy cannabis abuse was caused my amotivation, but I don't really subscribe to that view.

Still, I don't think trying it once would cause those symptoms.
