Accommodation at RVC

Hi!
I will be going to the RVC next year, and now have loads of questions for people who are already there!
I'm sorry if these questions have already been aswered...
I was wondering what difference there is between College Grove and Mary Brancker.. with regards to distance, confort, facilities....
If you could choose again, which halls would you go for, and why?
Oh and what does "computer data point in each room" mean?? Access to the internet?
And what are the kitchens like?

ahhh I'm already soo excited and it's still more than 6 months away!

thanks

Im in college grove, but im living in the second year flats in mary branker next year, and i wouldnt change a thing!!

college grove is fantastic, there are 7 people in each flat (6 in flat 1 coz its a disabled flat) with 4 upstairs and 3 down, with the klitchen. The rooms are all slightly different, but they are all the same price, and are all really nice rooms. You get your own bathroom which is tiny but great, with shower, toilet and sink. the bed are very small, but just about sleepable!! a desk and bedside cabinet, and an easy chair, which i dont really think many people use, and a mini fridge. Room J is over the kitchen and is a bigger room, and B is downstairs and has proper bathroom.

most flat have an american in it, ours is crazy but we love him!! and they seem to have stuck them all in A for American! hehe! Most of the flats also have one/two vet sci, and again, we love ours too! and the rest of us are vetmeds.

the flats are good size, and the kitchens are nice too, if they get a little messy at times! in the kitchen you get two ovens/sets of hobs, a big fridge which you get a shelf in, and a big freezer, which you get a drawre in. you also get a lockable cupboard and there are cupboards with glasses, plates, pots and pans etc. there is a double sink and a table which we all eat around and drink around!! the windowsill makes for a great empty bottle rack, aswell as the tops of the cupboards and the fridge!!!!

i love college grove, it is litterally 2 mins away from college so you can roll out of bed at 2 mins to 9 and be in a lecture, which is great for all the protein pete lectures you get in first term. plus you can go into college easily at the weekend to pick up post, use the computers, library etc. i think pretty much every flat gets on, ours is great, we have our differences but we do all get on. i think we know someone from near enough every flat, so its a friendly place.

the laundry is just outside the flats, its £1.20 for a wash and 20p for 8 mins in the dryer (cheaper then mary branker). the washers are big and fairly decent, but they are the same type in both halls so i would recomend getting an airer wherever you end up.

mary branker is about a 20 min walk away from college in kentish town. its a newer building and the flats will only have been lived in once. i have friends there and have been shown around their flats. they have 7 people in the flats, but there are some flats of 6, because im in one next year! there kitchen has a microwave and a toaster in when you get there, which you dont get in college grove, and they have a little lounge type area with sofas which, again, you dont get in college grove.

the rooms are all the same size in mary branker, and are smaller then the rooms in college grove. the beds are bigger, and the desk is under the window, which is nice, and there is a proper office type chair to work on, whereas in college grove we get a little padded chair, which is still nice. they get a full length mirror in the rooms at mary branker but in college grove we only get the bathroom mirror.

the bathrooms in mary branker are different to the ones in college grove, the shower has a proper shower door but other then that, i think they are about the same.

the flats in mary branker are all on a corridor, so they feel more like a flat, whereas college grove is more like a mini house.

the internet point is that there is access to the internet in each room, mary branker is broadband, but college grove is just as fast.

if i could chose again, i would still go for college grove. its closer to college and you can just nip back for lunch etc, which works out cheaper then buying it in college. everyone is friendly and most people get on. im glad im in mary branker next year, but im glad i went for it in second year, not first because i know the area better now for walking, know the busses etc.

hope that helped! well done on your unconditional, and ill be seeing you next year!! if youve got any other questions, pm me

ohh thank you so much!!!! I was getting a bit desperate that no one would answer!
I definately see the good side of college grove being so close to college, it must be really practical and would be a nice change from the 40 minute commute I've been doing uptil now.
I'll keep you posted on where I end up... i can't wait!

I think theres something like 42 places in the mary brancker house for 2nd years, and the rest just rent houses around Camden. I have a house in the 1 st year - and it is stressful finding a suitable house/flat - and more imporatantly *cheap* house/flat - but loads of the current 2nd years/3rd years are leaving so you can take their houses!!

Yeah Yeah, I wanted to go for MB this year, but I decided to just stay in the house since I'll be here for 3/4 years ( ), but its perfect for all the vets - damn I *wish* I got halls!!

You'll get a shock with the "long" walk next year - eeek!! - I always get so jealous of all the college grovers - rolling out of bed into 9am lectures!!:p:

Yeah, ive had mine too and im in Mary Brancker which also wasnt my first choice! I really wanted college grove because it was right next to the RVC and as ive never lived in a city before, i thought id get to know my way around the place first which i could do being in college grove! im really annoyed about it aswel because as soon as i got the forms for accomodation i sent it off the next day!
the good side about mary bracker is that you have a lounge, which trust me, you miss in college grove! I absolutly loved living in college grove this year, but i cant wait to live in mary branker next year because they are brand new, but all the little setting up probs have been ironed out this year with my year being in there. Ive stopped over there a couple of times and the beds are proper sized singles, not like the tiny little beds in college grove! the bathrooms are all decent sizes and it seems like most of the year live there! another good thing is that second years will have a few flats there, me included  so if anyone wants anything or wants to know where to go out/what to do etc, we're going to be rite there and im sure we dont mind offering advice! it is a bit of a treck from college but its nice.

Thanks! thats good to know that theres positives that will hopefully outweigh the negative of it being so far away from the RVC!!
