Are TSRers representative sexually of UK population

Recently we've had a lot of related threads on sexual partners and the acceptability thereof. I know I've been berated as a macho from all sides (with a considerable number of people agreeing nevertheless) for my views and actions on this topic.

Yet I must admit, my ideas have been shaped somewhat by this site. For example, I had never met many people who wished to save their virginity until marriage. I was also shocked at how low many people's sexual numbers were.

Do I hang around with a load of slags, or are TSRers a bit prudish.

we're not representative but actually we could be. people are trying to remain virgins till they get married and they are aware fo diseases and want to be safe.you will get people who don't care.so...hmm...it's not wise to say we're representative though.need more stats for that.

Also, talking on TSR is very different to talking face to face. I think people are more likely to be completely honest about sexual partners and their true beliefs.

Its definitely not representative, don't you remember that poll where about 80+ people hadn't kissed someone at the age of 18? Don't think you'll find that too many places in the UK

Not representative, but that doesn't mean that your views are normal/right :p:

But then, Cambridge is not representative of the normal UK population, and I like it that way
Well I tend to bang anything thats up for it.., so put that in your survey.

Thanks for letting us know.

We'll get back to you when we find someone interested.

Righty ho chump, you do that small thing.
On a more serious note Profesh, isnt the size of your signature taking the piss a little. It makes the thread a lot longer.

Actually, you'll come to find that such is pretty much par for the course on TSR; with many being significantly more garish and obtrusive than my (tastefully understated) red-and-black number. For instance, Shylock's; which may be borne witness to above.

Besides which, as you may or may not already be aware, signatures no longer recur in subsequent posts by the same author; so yours is rather a trifling observation.

No it isn't representative; it's a narrow age group (mostly) of students, most of whom come here because they have some interest in academics of some kind. That's a relatively small proportion of the country.
Also, in a thread like "how many threesomes have you had?" those who have had more threesomes are more likely to take interest and reply to the thread than those who would vote none. That's the drawback of telling a respondant what a piece of research involves then letting them decide if they wish to take part.

Yes, I work in market research!

You said it yourself: that on those threads, there were a lot of very low numbers and a lot of very very high numbers. They're clearly not prudish. What's interesting is that it's mostly girls who gave high numbers (whereas you'd expect males to be shouting it out everywhere that they've slept with 50 women).

Plus to mention something about the number of sexual partners of people, when the average age on here is probably 17 and the average age at which the person loses their virginity in the UK is about 16/17, it's not surprising to find out that people are inexperienced or virgins.

Just at your university, I bet you that a huge percentage of the guys in first year are still virgins. There's nothing mind-blowing about that.

Because of the "big-mouths", who boast about their sex-life, who exaggerate, who invent stories, we often get a skewered view of what is sexually normal. In those threads you mention, you don't see half of the guys writing "hey look at me, I'm a virgin. I've never been naked with a girl before..." yet probably half of the guys on here are virgins. I remember my high school days, when, in a group of 20 guys in my class, 3 or 4 guys would go on about how they slept with some spanish girl on holiday, who you never actually saw... out of the 3 or 4, 2 were probably lying. Yet that didn't stop all the other guys from thinking "Oh ****, I desperately need to lose my virginity or soon I won't be normal".

Sam, just because thats what you experienced doesn't mean its true, or "right".

no it is not representative.

1) people replying to certain threads have a reason for their interest: eg threesomes will mainly be answered by those strongly against and those who have had. my older virgin thread was mainly anwwrd by ...old virgins

2)we are academics - therefore more likely to know about safe sex than eg most 15 y/o single mothers wh o would not use TSR

3) if we stud y alot we might not have time for sex

4)sexuality among school students is different to in real world and uni and at work.
for example most high school bf migh think it ok for his 14 y/o gf to wait 2 years before having sex. a guy i meet in the workplace is not likely to think it normal. A n adult/mid 20's guy/girl might use the 'three date rule' whereas a school student would not

True. But TSR seems more conservative than Cambridge. To talk about Cambridge- as we know- is a little futile anyway due to the variety of groups, who on the whole are pretty homogenous. You must've noticed, lots of virgin girls group together in CICCU or whatever, and there are some very..ahem..active girls' drinking socs. In fact, the loosest girls i've ever met are both at Cam and boaties no less

On the whole I'd say TSR is more sexually conservative than my scene at Cambridge (think Cindies regulars) who are in turn more conservative in the main that joe public.

Thanks for that but that simply applies to everything here.

I mentioned my high school days to explain the social phenomenon whereby the minority who are loudmouths set the perceived standard. It's not something that just applies to high school or to my high school.

So you disagree that:
- A lot of people (about half) on here are virgins?
- That a huge percentage of guys in their first year of university are virgins?
