any med. students up?

This has been worrying me for a while... For the last week or so, I have been feeling really sick in the early morning, about 2-3 am. It comes on quite suddenly and is like a strong stomach ache and urge to throw up. It's weird cos it always seems to be at the same time, and I am otherwise really fit and healthy. I have no other symptoms. The pain goes away when I make myself sick.
Should I be worried? What could it be?

Sadly it is not due to drinking too much. I don't drink heavily, and the last time I got drunk was about 4 weeks ago. Damn A-Level stress. I do get enough sleep - eventually. Have an odd sleep pattern at the moment though, what with trying to meet coursework deadlines and all. Do you really think it could be that? Odd. I'm just worried cos it comes so suddenly.

I confided in a friend and she joked it could be morning sickness. I'm really just looking for confirmation that it isn't.

I'm not a med student either but it is well-known that stress can cause digestive problems - everyone experiences stress in different way and if like you said, A-levels are causing you problems at the moment then this could be a valid reason for your sickness.

If you are female and have been sexually active in the recent months i would urge you to take a pregnancy test though.... even TSR med students can't guess whether or not you are pregnant.... Try not to worry though x

We cannot confirm that you aren't pregnant. For that, you need a pregnancy test.
When you throw up what is your vomit like? has it got green/yellow steaks of bile, or is it really watery acid like?
And do you find when you are in bed - before throwing up, that you get a really acidy taste/feeling in your throat?

And lastly do you eat or drink anything after (say) 8pm?

If you've been sexually active lately and used no protection etc, perhaps you should take a pregnancy test.
Are you on any form of birth control, i.e the pill? Feeling sick is one of the main problems you might have while on the pill.

Also diet, lack of sleep or stress (A-Levels can be tough!) might be involved. I used to get like that if I ate a lot of caffeine or sugary stuff. If it persists, it's probably best to see a doctor though, no-one here can tell you exact answers.

As a 1st year student I should stay well away from giving medical advice but anyway... My guess would be that the pain occurs at night as that is when your stomach is relatively empty. If you have to much acid in my start to "digest" your stomach which couses pain. If the problem continues I would suggest seeing your GP. It is probably nothing and you will just get some antiacid but it does no harm to check it out. You may wish to get a pragnancy test at the same time if you think you may need one.

give medical advice, but at least narrow in on the condition you have in mind.

i think you might have a bug. i had the same thing last week. it started on friday. i felt sick after breakfast but then i only retched,no actual vomit.and i had the nausea (feeling like i was going to throw up) all day. it happened for the next few days but now i'm better.everyone i asked even the nurse, suggested it was a bug.if you do feel though, you can take those tablets, that settle your stomach,so you don't feel like you're going to throw up.they helped. hope you feel better soon :hugs:
medical students aren't allowed to give medical advice to anyone. They have to sign a waiver saying they won't (at least here) and so pretty much aren't allowed to help you.

Your GP is probably the best person to talk to!

Heartburn can often make you feel sick to your stomach (sounds odd, I know)
she might not be pregnant..i thought i was as well last week but i'm not. but just in case, just do a test to make sure you're not. a friend joked about me being pregnant and that got me worried.

Have you missed a period? you need to wait until youve missed one untill it shows up on the tests, although i think theyre may be one where you dont have to wait now. also morning sickness, is apparently, a fairly constant thing for a lot of pregnany women, it doesnt just happen in the morning, but throughout the day as well, so i really wouldnt worry.
if it carries on for more than a couple of weeks, id go and see your gp, just to be sure theres not anything wrong.
