when i was first looking into unis last year i looked into kingston because it did my course and its in the area where i wana go. i did lots of research but i was really put off of kingston because i heard loads of reports about how kingston is one of the worst unis. i dont know how true all those reports were, but it put me off because all the websites i went on, i saw the same thing about kingston!

firstly.. what course are you doing? - unis are good for different courses. id look into which one is better for the course your doing. also - have you visited both unis? - if not, visit them. sometimes you just know wether a uni is for you once you visit them. when i visited rhul i really liked it and had this good feeling. whereas when i visited various other unis, i just had a bad feeling and knew it wasnt for me.

about rhul and posh people. i cant really comment on that because i dont know much info about that kinda thing. but dont worry, because im going 2 rhul in september and im not posh so we can be left out together :p: lol. ive heard that its not full of posh people. dont know how true that is though.

good luck

Em xx

Granted, there are some middle-class types, but not exclusively- I'm definitley not! Plus, for Psychology RHUL is damn good. I'd repeat what Em said, you have to visit a uni first, otherwise it's playing Russian roulette with your future. Kingston could be for you, or it may not.

Good Luck with your decisions!

Thanks for the advice:smile:
I visited RH and was nearly in tears cause i loved it!!
Visting Kingston in a couple of weeks.
Really, so your saying there's more upper class then middle?

Reply 4

I'd say generally more middle-class. There's the odd hooray-Henry, probably moreso than Kingston, but most good uni have a few. In truth theres people of all walks of life here, you'll find people like you.

Glad to hear you liked it here so much! I applied to Kingston and visited it but I didn't really like the atmosphere there, maybe it didn't feel academic enough? I dunno, I still remember it though.

It's so funny to hear you all talk about posh, middle-class etc.! Such a British thing to do, isn't it? *lol*
I'm also coming to RH this September to do Psychology! And while I am probably from what you'd consider a middle-class background, I certainly ain't posh! So there's already three of us who can be left out together!

Just seen the Psychology timetable on the RH website, and its 5 days a week!! I must be mistaken?????

In the second term, I know my friends that do psychology have 3 days, with Wednesday and Tuesday totally free (and no 9am lectures lucky bar-sterwards  ) but it was different in the 1st time if I remember rightly. The lectures are two-hourly I know (though they often leave after 1 hour!). However, there are more Psychology hours than History, I have 7 hours a week, Psych's more like 10-12.

No it's not. It might be doing quite bad in the rankings but it's not because it's bad in teaching. In fact, when it comes to teaching quality, Kingston's always done very well. The rest is very subjective.
Though i do agree that Royal Holloway is better overall.

Have to agree with post before. Kingston is poo
Probably not from teaching but from poor funding and a lack of adequate facilities. As for upperclass-ism, let the snobs form their own gang and moan about how they didn't get into Oxbridge etc, and us "normal people" can go out and get hammered

We-e-l-l I was trying to be nice about Kingston's reputation, because I come from a background where any attending any uiniversity is an acheivement, but "poo" is another way to put it.

lol. reminds me of when we went to that ucas convention in islington last march. i went upto the guys representing kingston and asked them if kingston is as rubbish as everyone says. i felt really bad because it came out really bluntly.. i didnt mean to say it like that! my friends had a huge go at me for being so rude, lmao

Omg i cant believe u did that, Em!!!

hmm i think kingston's okies but it's not that great. It was my insurance last yr but i really didnt wanna go cos it didnt seem academic enough to me..like I wouldnt be pushed hard enough and I'm someone who needs that. (hm, does that sound snobbish or rude?! :s-smilie:)
I've heard that Kingston is good in terms of finding a job after you have finished your degree but I dont actually have any concrete evidence to support this.
As far as the rich kid thing, there are a fair amount of middle class people at the uni i think, but you'd get that in quite a few unis I reckon, but maybe it seems more pronounced at RHUL cos it's a smaller uni than somewhere like UCL or kings (I think, but correct me if i'm wrong which i probably am! lol.)

I have to agree about the facilities, they are quite bad, at least the Penhryn Road and Knights Park campuses (Kingston Hill is quite nice). However, the New University Project is underway and very soon (in 2007-2009) the old buildings will be replaced by nice, glassy and spacious ones. This will definately push Kingston up the rankings as it's doing very well in terms of teaching and the only thing that seems to be pushing it down is the state of the facilities. Apart from that, it's a good uni.

Ok, I'll give it to you that Kingston university is better than no university and it really is a priviledge to go to University...
But seeing as this topic is called 'Can't decide between Kingston & Royal Holloway', I think anybody can see the advantages of one particular university

Reply 18

It's not only better than "no university" but it's actually better than most universities. Royal Holloway is better but not by as much as you might think.
