gynaecomastia

I'm a 17 yr old guy and i have it, it's probably the most embarrasing thing ever:redface: I can't stand how it looks... i HATE taking my shirt off around people and i cringe everytime i look in the mirror:frown: It's supposed to go away after a while but I've had it for about a year and am getting seriously worried... would seriously consider surgery to rid of it if it came to that. Is there anything else i could do?:frown:

Is this basically man boobs yeah?

Mate had it and got given some pills by the doctor to sort it out - not sure if it worked as he moved colleges so never saw the results but if its bugging you that much go see your GP.

As long as you're not fat they won't stay with you forever, its just a teenage thing.

any idea what caused it? If it was some exogenous stimulus then that makes it quite different to "normal" pubertal gyno

A friend of mine has that - he worked out masses, and now it's really not noticeable, as it just blends in with the rest of his 6-pack.

Have you been to your GP about it? I have no idea what the treatment might be (short of surgery), but they do take cosmetic problems seriously if they are causing you significant distress (which I imagine this is).

Well I think my dad may have had it as well but I'm not sure, that would be my best guess.

No i haven't talked to a doctor about it... i tried to subtlety ask my mum to make me an appointment a while back and she started asking all sorts of questions. Was too embarrased so i told her just forget it:redface:

Going to the beach for a week or so this summer with my family and cousins, don't have a clue what i'm gunna do if it hasn't gone away by then:frown:

You can make an appointment for yourself you know. Just get the number of your surgery from the directory or yell.com and ring them up. They'll only need to know your name (don't worry about NHS numbers or anything like that).

Go see you doctor about it. honestly you certainly won't be the first case he has seen. there are multiple reasons for gynacomastia, from just plain old idiopathic (means for no apparent reason), familial (a family thing), genetic (you may have a genetic tweak as it were that causes it) and medication (some like spironolactone are notorious for causing it)

Reply 12

my mate has it aand he isnt fat! its a genetic thing, higher estregen levels etc.

If it hasnt gone by the time you hit your 20's it mostly likely will never go away!! surgery is an option, also there are some tablets you can take but dont always work. Working out and building muscle doenst always hide them as well

It depends how bad it is, you can take something called Nolvadex which will definitely reduce it given time, but to be honest, to completely remove it is going to require surgery.

a bra?

Saved me from saying it. Cheers.

But yeah, would increasing pect muscle mass not only make them more pronounced?

Reply 15

Yeh, it would also make the gyno more pronounced.

It is basically breast tissue behind the nipple, whether you have a big chest or a small chest you will always have this saggy bit of breast tissue, if that makes any sense.

How long do you reckon it would take nolva to do the trick (or at least reduce it)

Reply 17

3 months? Depending on how bad it is its not really worthwhile though, if you have a small case then fine, but it sounds as if the problem is quite severe for the OP, in which case...surgery.

Thanks, that's good to know.

Meh well it's not like its a really severe case but it's... noticeable. That nolvadex sounds like something to look into.

Either way, go to your GP, if I were you, I'd try and go down the surgery route, try and explain to your GP that it really affects your self confidence but also that they're very painful, say for example that you can't lay on your front cuz it hurts too much, it hurts when you wear t-shirts because it rubs against your nipples etc.

Try and emphasise the pain aspect and just put a passing comment about the confidence/self-esteem thing, otherwise hes more likely to send you to a psychologist(or whatever).
