I'm in media but not journalism.

It depends which area of journalism you want to be in - do you want to be a reporter, or a features writer? Reporting tends to be more competitive and you have to be confident and pushy. Features writing can be done on a freelance basis, or you can try getting a regular job with a newspaper.

To get some experience, read a lot and write a lot for practise. If your school or uni has a newsletter or newspaper, start writing for that. Employers love experience, and you can learn a lot from just writing a weekly reviews section. Try writing letters to newspapers and magazines, asking them for work experience. You might not get anywhere, but it can't do any harm.

If you're going to do this, I'd be happy to read your letters before you send them off and suggest any changes.
