How do I know Wetherspoons pub's competitors?

At a local level, you should be looking at other low-budget pubs nearby that sell both food and drink. Note that 'Spoons tends to attract both pensioners (during the day) and young people (in the evenings) because both have low incomes.

At a national level, you should be looking at chains which seek to attract the same sort of customers - Scream would be a good comparison for the students, and other pub chains have a variety of brands, e.g. Punch Taverns and Mitchells and Butlers - these brands seek to attract different sorts of customers.

Third vote for Yates, despite finding it not really comparable to good old Wethers

Yates? Try googling it, as someone suggested, but you can have a good guess by thinking about what Wetherspoons is (a chain pub with competitive prices rather than high end products) and thinking about which other chains are similar.

Is Yates really the competitor of Wethers? It seems lively while Wethers has no music. Of course its the price thats the deciding factor but...is Wethers really popular with students?

Not sure about the music issue but if you look at what they sell and what they charge then there isn't much difference between the two chains apart from the name.
