I'm not opening my mouth for a zillion years

I got braces yesterday. I'm 18 and technically my orthodontic treatment began at 9, but I ran away soon after (a long traumatising story). It's really embarassing because every person I've bumped into has said: "Aren't you a bit old?" I keep having to explain myself to people and it makes me feel worse about the situation. Has anyone else had braces at a relatively late age? I'm hoping to get them off by uni (2007) but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Waiting list for eight years?! Wow. I don't think I was even on a waiting list; I got seen right away. I just walked into my dentist and signed up a few months ago as well. Maybe there's just a huge quantity of orthodontists/dentists in my area.
Bless. Men with braces can look quite distinguished

I had 'em for 3 years, until I was 16. I don't think it really makes any difference what age you have them, people are always going to ask questions, and you are always going to feel relatively self-conscious about it. It's just the way it is.

I didn't make a big deal of having them, and consequently hardly anyone noticed I had them. I advise you just to forget that they are there... the time flies past, and the end result makes it all worthwhile ( <--- that is what you will look like after you have them taken off, minus the yellow face, hopefully).

nowt wrong with braces at 18 - I'm likely gonna have my braces on to after my 18th birthday. Think of the benefits of straight beautiful teeth after your treatment is over. Remember Cristiano Ronaldo had braces, so did Tom Cruise after they were 18 and believe me orthodonture is quite common between people of the ages of 11-19  good luck

Yeah, theres loads of orthodontists in the south east but hardly any in the north (most study down south and just stay after they finish apparently).

Exactly. And when you're an adult the chances of the treatment being a success is much greater, as you've stopped growing and your face is unlikely to change. So everyone's a winner.

I had braces for about 18 months when I was in sixth form. I got used to them soon enough and nobody ever said anything about them.

yelwalkietalkie - as other people have said, it really is a matter of getting used to them. If people respond as you say they have, i.e. 'aren't you a bit old?' then just think that you'll have fab teeth in no time and it's so worth having one when you need it.... it's not your fault they're ignorant! Besides, many people have had braces before so will understand what you're going through, and certainly be more sensitive to your awareness of having braces at 18 :hugs:

I'm at uni (am 19 years old) and had my train tracks taken off in January. Nobody noticed :frown:

There's still someone in my block who has braces.

My Geography teacher has braces- and i'd say she's late 30s- I wouldn't worry- you can get ones with clear bands so they're not as obvious as say, blue and yellow which I had!!!

That seems a bit rude and insensitive! Are these just random strangers you meet?
