What does 'Applied' mean?

I am sorry to sound stupid, but what does 'Applied' mean when it is in the context of an A level, such as AS Applied ICT?

Is it in someway inferior to ordinary A Levels?

Applied means to put into practice or a particular use. For example, in the case of Applied ICT, the work done would be ''vocational'' - ie be directly transferrable to the workplace.
