swollen glands

I woke up yesterday morning to find my glands on one side of my face, kind of under my jaw, were enormously swollen. I then blacked out on the floor for a few minutes. They went down yesterday and I had no symptoms other than aching a bit. Today I've just woken up and again they are huge! I'm also getting a sore throat and the pain in my face has got worse.

Now obviously I'm about to book an appointment with the doctor, but since I can't get one for a few days I just was wondering if you had any idea what it was and what I should do about it. My first thought was mumps, as plenty of people went home from uni with that at the end of term and the incubation period is quite long, but I've had the MMR vaccine so is it possible? Any other thoughts?

It could be glandular fever... i had it last year, its rubbish! If you've got that, sleep ALOT! theres no cure so u just have to rest your body until it goes. It depends where the swollen glands are... i thought i might have mumps but my doctor told me i would look kinda like a hamster wiv the swollen glands if i did! are the lumps like on the very top of your neck or more on your jaw on your face?

Thanks for the response . Eeeek, I hope it's not glandular fever!! They are quite low down, sort of slightly to the side of my chin, so I don't know.

well likew the doc sed u look like a hamster if its mumps! im sorry if im wrong! tbh different people get glandular fever differently- mine wasnt too bad. I was completely out of it for a week and i kept gettin ill before that but i only had a really sore, swollen throat, i was gettin thru so many paracetamol! but seriously ask ur doc.... they'll do a blood test to find out if tis glandular fever if they think it is. Jus be sensible.... don't go out at nite (thats what caused mine i reckon) and catch up on sleep

Hey Ciara, I had the same thing when I got back from uni. Naturally, with Bristol having a Mumps outbreak I presumed it was that and got all scared. But it wasn't. My glands aren't swollen now and my throat doesn't hurt at all. I think I just went a bit crazy in the last week (i.e had no sleep, lots of drinking etc) and overdid it a bit and my body get all stressy. I slept sooo much the first night and it helped it loads. Try not to worry, it could be mumps, or you could have just overdone it this term. Either way, rest up and get lots of sleep. If it is mumps, don't worry, you'll recover fine and at least its not in termtime when you would have to be locked up in your room for a week!
Hope you feel better xxx

nothing to do with the thyroid gland is it? we have been learning about that in biology recently, it can swell up, known as a goiter. however, this is something to do with diet and iodine, so its probably more likely to be glandular fever. But dont listen to us cos we;re not doctors and you might end up scared you've got something more serious than you have!! Honestly, just wait for the doctors advice!
