often they're free on certain nights.

Have put on a lot of gigs at uni, venue cost on the whole goes from free for the basement of a pub/pub function room on a weekday night to over £100 for a largeish small gig venue. Main costs on top of this are PA hire (£20 from a mate of mine, would be a lot more otherwise) and sound guys (depends on the size of the gig, if its a small gig I tend to do it, bigger all day gig etc and we hire someone at a cost of £50.

Its a fair bit of hard work in negociating with bands/promoters etc to get them to play, also watch out for riders- they'll often eat into your budget quite a lot and in many cases the provision of one will be part of the terms of the contract.

Yeh it depends on the bar and how many people are coming. Walkabout near me hires its upstairs out for £50 whereas other bars nearby it ranges from free to £200+

£100 - £250 round near me. although my area is slightly more countryside-ish than most places!

hope that helps (a bit)

What are riders?

I know it is extremely hard work, as for the sound I can do it all myself, I have studied a lot of sound production modules at university so I know what is involved at least for a small gig like this. I am also doing the DJ (I have been practising 8 months now).

My big problem at the moment is the door, getting a trustworthy person to it will be hard.

riders are essentially a hospitality package, food, drink etc. An issue we have a lot of the time is that gigs are being put on in a licenced premises so instead of getting cases of beer from a shop we have to buy them per bottle in the venue- add food to that and towels etc and a rider can often be in the region of £100 :frown:

I've worked the door at our gigs a few times, its not too hard but it can be annoying when people are trying to take the piss and get in for free etc.

Its hard work to put on a gig but it is often worthwhile, especially when your name gets around a bit as being a good promoter.

there is pub near me where the function room is free

tis a little rough mind
A lot say you can hire for free but impose a minimum bar spend, and perhaps a deposit that you wont get back if the bar spend is under that threshold
