Is anybody else living at home? As a Londoner I thought it would be the right thing to do (economically, plus I like my home comforts) but I still want to get involved in the uni/ meet people. A bit worried that people tend to first meet at accomodation.

I'm also not an alcohol/ clubbing fan. Will I still be able to meet people at Freshers? I'm a bit disappointed with the list of events - Traffic Light Parties and Toga Nights are far, far from my thing.

in the exact same boat as you, travelling from northwest/west london, not a fan of drinking and clubbing either, we're probably likely to still meet people at the non clubbing events, and stuff like the freshers fair i guess?

Hey! Im happy to find so many students who are not fans of drinking and clubbing! I prefer being sober and healthy and waking up early. Maybe Im even a bit boaring, but It is my position. Hope others will respect it:smile:.

By the way, is there anyone studying Foundation?

If you want some advice, the science program is similar to what you do at A-levels, just a small step to helping you understand the stuff you need before doing a degree you want to. Also you can apply to Sheffield, etc as long as you got the right modules

I'm going to live in Unite Accommodation hall, and that's why I'm worried about difficulties in having friends, too. I chose this living type, cos I want more roomspace, own kitchen; comfort is very important for me, as you see. We all have the similar interests, so I think we can communicate with each other. Let's meet during Freshers, for example?

Basically when you do a foundation course, I believe you got to reapply through ucas, so you can apply else where if they accept the modules you do which includes the likes of Sheffield..........some one from London met came to qmul.
Don't forget that no-one can tell how drunk you are, so if you want to appear drunk to fit in, act that way.

There are various ways to conceal that you are drinking less than you actually are... eg pretending a straight coke is a vodka/whisky/whatever and Coke; discarding a pint halfway through; shandy in place of a pint, etc.

If you end up with a bunch of 'drinking game' tossers who insist that you DIO and CONSUME!!! then you are hanging out with the wrong people and you need to find new friends.

At the end of the day, the 'not fitting in' aspect is not something to worry about too much. You might get a bit of a ribbing for not keeping up, but your new friends will become used to it and bored with it soon enough. As will all mockery, let it sail over your head and it won't last long.

One thing - if you are drinking in rounds you can't use your lower consumption to get out of your round! That's not on.

Me too me too! Commuting from North London and not exactly a fan of the whole clubbing thingummy- I've nothing against alcohol in general just don't particularly like the taste of most and don't need it to have fun! And in regards to meeting people, we can always meet each other? There've got to be more of us out there ^_^

I figure the BBQ, games nights and freshers fair will be the least stressful events.... though I'll go to some of the others anyway to see what all the fuss is about :P Hope you guys enjoy yourselves

Same advice that I give on ALL these many, many identikit threads.

Don't let the fact that some people will be drinking more than they can handle and clubbing until the small hours mean that you have to copy them BUT nor does it mean you have to do the opposite and sit in your room by yourself before going to bed at 10pm. Just find a happy balance. Go to the pub when everyone else goes, socialise, meet people, play some pool, have a couple of pints and take them slowly, and when you're tired, go home. You might find that actually, thats what everyone else wants to do as well, they just didn't want to be the first one to say it.

Yeh, I get it. Just find the whole drinking game superficial and worried about getting too out of control. Been out drinking tonight and met some nice people thogh, Good icebreaker but don't think I'd enjoy doing it every night :frown:

ditto the both of you! glad to see we're all in the same boat, i don't drink for religious reasons as well as personal e.g. not liking the feeling out of control/disinhibited though for others to each their own.
i'm sure/hoping there'll be some events that won't all be drinking related? :s-smilie: though that's all i can see on the student union page right now...

i dont drink either due to religious reasons as well as my choice of lifestyle, start uni on monday and realllly hoping theres alot of non drinking events on where i can meet lots of new people...im also a local student so living at home, hope it doesnt reduce my chance too much to make alot more friends :s-smilie: and yeh ive read soo many comments of people discussing nothing but alcohol for freshers week too :s-smilie:
