I think that it's written on the IBO site that less than 1% of students get 45 points.

At least from that we now know that its not impossible . I'd say that 44-45 points is going to be quite hard to get, but i suppose it all depends on your choices. For example, some sciences are easier than others at IB..

Generally about 80 per cent of Diploma Programme students are awarded the diploma each examination session. Fewer than 1 per cent of students gain 45 points.
as stated on the IBO website.

Wow, that is quite impressive. My sister got 43 last year and told me she was one of the 5% to get 42 points and above *me thinks*

last year only about 60 people got 45 pts... worldwide. 2 of them were in my school

I read 0.2% with 45 and an additional 0.5% with 44. So that would be 0.7% w more than 44 points or more. Take it +/-0.2 and I think that's it.

However, such a score need not indicate excellence per se. A person who take very difficult courses and end up with 42 or 43 would have to be considered at least as excellent.

I know at least 3 people (including me) on my uni course who got 44 points. So not only I was rejected from Ox with that score. :p:

OH, That's my goal.....44, but i think i'm just dreaming!!40 would be excellent...

Yeah, hope to get like 40 to be honest. Bad thing is that most often the teachers at my school compare me to my sister which is just wrong...
In Sevenoaks apparently 8 out of those 60 got 45 points last year! Crazy

i dont do IB, am i right in assuming that you get marks out of 7 for 6 subjects and a mark out of 3 for your essay? (does practically everyone get a 3 for the essay?)
Reply 11
yep, but (and I don't mean to be rude) you're just wrong in saying everyone gets three points for the Extended Essay and the ToK stuff. It's actually really hard to get an A in the EE (though it depends on the subject). Just to polish up some of your knowledge

EE is the hardest part of it....and it's just worth 3 marks.....quite difficult to get them all....for me i think impossible...
I think that one should aim high. If you aim for a 45, you know you will have to work hard to earn that. So if you do miss your target you still will work hard and may score a bit lower than 45, not a dramatic amount however. If you aim low as in 35 you won't be pushing yourself to get a higher score. Thus my goal would be to get 45. I know it's damn near impossible, but one can dream, right? :tomato:

A girl in my IB year got a predicted total of 44. Everyone in my IB year gets predicted a default 2 bonus points out of the 3 possible, but she received 3 bonus points, so as to help her as much as possible with her American university applications. I find this grossly unfair since she does not score top marks in TOK and because others who applied for American universities did not receive 3 bonus. Am I alone in my judgment of this situation??
well, predicted grades are often inflated...teachers don't wanna screw over u're uni apps by predicting low =/

yea..i'm aiming for a 44 (damn english =/)
Although my predicted grades are somewhere near the realm of excellent, I often wonder if I will get what I deserve. There are so many extraneous factors (weather (yes, really), health, sleep-deprivation, food, noise) that the dependent variable of my IB grade is dubious at best.

Am I the only one to doubt my own capabilities in this board???

I don't get why that would be crazy. How well people do depend both on (1) the talents/pre-knowledge of the student body, and (2) on the standard of teaching.

A school which can choose its students meticulously and provide a high standard of teaching would have no problem in producing eight 45s. Rather, I'd say it would be quite strange if the 45ers were spread out evenly amongst all IB schools in the world, because different schools have different objectives. Some schools are comprehensive and see as their task to provide a good education to a wide range of kids, not to achieve the highest scores in the world. It requires quite a lot from the teacher to teach up to the 45 points level in a mixed-abilities class. I would imagine that in a place like Sevenoaks, most of class time can be used to drill higher level skills, without the need to go through basic concepts over and over again.

So, if you're in an excellent school, it is undoubtedly far easier achieving 45 points. A person otbtaining 37 or 39 from a comprehensive school may be far more driven/gifted/intelligent than someone getting 43 from an elite school. Of course, in 99% of cases, the person won't get credit for that. Sad but true.

Also bear in mind that there are some excellent intensive study courses open for you during holidays if you just have enough money. They are out of reach for some people.

Life isn't fair.
