how do you wake up feeling refreshed?

How on earth do you wake up feeling refreshed? No matter how much or how little sleep i've had, I never feel like this!

Last night I went to sleep at midnight, with the view of waking up at 9 to get some work done. When my alarm went off I was just SO tired, and set my alarm for 10. This went on until I only got up at 13.30 when someone phoned me :frown:

How can I not feel so crap in the morning, because I really need to start getting up early!!

I find if I get in the habit of waking up at an earlier time, setting my alarm etc I find it easier. The first few days are poo, but after that you start to think "yeah, look at me getting up early, all bright eyed and bushy-tailed, and look what I can get done before midday!" Then I feel really :biggrin:zingy and fresh.

In my experience it's a matter of habit. If I haven't got an amount of stuff done before 12 I feel like it's not worth bothering with, but if I have I just want to charge on and get even more done.

I really do think feeling 'refreshed' after a night's sleep is all to do with how much energy you want to expend during the day and how positive you're feeling. If you're feeling sad and like you aren't going to do much you will feel sleepy even if you've slept for hours. Have you thought that perhaps sleep is an escape, a safe place where noone can get to you, so your body is telling you you're tired so you can stay snuggly and not have to face the world?

Are you getting a good quality of sleep?
Make sure the room isn't too hot/cold, your bed is comfortable etc. Don't eat anything just before you go to sleep, your body will be trying to digest it instead of resting.
Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day is meant to help too.
Masturbate?...

I find it much easier to get up if I say to myself I'm gonna spend the first 45 minutes of my morning eating a tasty breakfast and watching something good (DVDs if necessary), the idea being that if I get up too late I won't have time for such things.

Thanks guys

Blissy - I think you're right...I love being up early because it gives me a buzz that I'm awake and doing stuff...it's just actually getting up! I hate getting up late and wasting the day though :frown: Maybe this thought will spur me on!

Nemine - I think my quality of sleep is ok - other than I always wake up needing the toilet every few hours :frown: That is getting kinda annoying...

Bed early, like 10.30 at the latest. Spray room with Lavender scent. I use Febreeze lavender and camomile. Make sure your sheets are clean and crisp and your pillow is firm enough.

hang on, let me rephrase that:

Try to make it to bed by 10.30. Study in bed if needed. Spray stuff in room, makes you sleepy. Wash sheets at least once a term. Find pillow.

Move your alarm clock to the other side of the room, so you are forced to get out of bed and switch it off. Once I've been up for about 5 minutes, I'm not sleepy anymore.

The problem with me is that i just cant go to bed early at all. I feel my most awake and alert between 9pm and 1am everyday, if i go to bed at about 11pm i lay awake till about 3am feeling like i want to run a marathon or something. Daytime i never have any energy whatsoever!
I know the SECRET!!

Firstly, go to bed at 10 pm when possible - it's the 2 hours between 10 and midnight that make you refreshed. Secondly, try not to get up later than 9 - after 9 your organism starts producing some feromones or somethin that make it impossible to get up. Also, you only need 8-9 hours sleep (not less or more, although some people need 10). If you sleep on for 12 hours you'll be really tired!

Plus some of the abvove posts about having normal temperature and fresh air. Good luck!
i find it really hard to get up unless i really have to, like if i have an appointment or a lecture or something. certainly not if i just have to revise all day!
in this respect i am so looking forward to starting a real job next year, i will be forced out of bed at 7am, and i can finally break my ridiculous but impossible to break cycle of 3am-12pm sleeping.
i know it's just my body clock, but even if i try really hard for a few days to break the cycle, i always lapse back into it as i have no big incentive to keep it up(especially if i get a hangover or something)!...and then if i wake up late i feel like there's no point in doing anything with my day as i have slept in so long and been so lazy!...so most of the time i never wak up feeling refreshed.
i can't believe i am actually looking forward to getting up early every day next year- but at least it will force my sleep pattern into normality....having said that, i am really bad at going to bed early, so i'll probably just be permanently tired....
I find if I go to the gym in the evening and have had a hard workout, I sleep much better.
Also bear in mind that you shouldn't eat too much straight before bed. Try and leave a couple of hours between your last meal and going to bed, otherwise your body isn't ready for sleep while its digesting that food. If you want to eat just before bed, something which is protein based and not carbohydrate is best, eg have a couple of boiled eggs. The other advantage of that is that carbohydrate is more likely to store as fat while you are sleeping, protein isn't.

It's not the fact I can't sleep guys, it's the fact I can't wake up....

I just have a bath, I find that really really wakes me up.

I tend to sleep for about 8-9 hours these days.
Wash sheets at least once a term

eww! bedding should be washed once a week or at the very least once a fortnight! once a term is not enough

anyways I have the exact same problem waking up except the day I have a morning lecture/day when I work ofcourse! but on my other days when I plan to get up early I just cant! the alarm goes off and I just stay in bed a bit longer, then a little bit longer and so on until I feel frustrated because I havent got up early to study or do whatever else that needs to be done :frown: so im in the same boat heh

:ditto:

I can go to bed at about 1 and get to sleep pretty quickly, but if i go to bed at 11 i'll just lie there till way past 1, sometimes about 3 or 4, as i just havnt done enough that evening to tire me out. Even staying up and watching TV helps me get to sleep when i eventually go to bed, cos at least im doing something other than just lying there.
getting to bed earlier than midnight will help a lot, and eating less fatty/mass produced foods, which will make your brain feel less groggy.
and start the day with a cold drink rather than tea. that always snaps me awake.
*YAWN*
Now I'm awake and I feel refreshed.
Done

why would it help if i got to bed earlier than midnight though really? I mean that's still 9 hours sleep, which should be more than enough...

I don't eat fatty or mass produced foods either...
