Seeing as a lot of you are asking about accommodation, I thought I might aswell create a mini directory of the accommoation tours provided by Aber Insiders on Youtube. Some of you may not have been to a open day, so please see the 'Open Day Style' tour of the main Penglais campus towards the bottom of this post. Then finally those who aren't really sure where Aberystwyth is or what the area looks like please see the 'Constitution Hill/Aberystwyth Scenery' video at the bottom of this post.

Don't forget to watch the videos posted on the Aberystwyth University Youtube Channel. There are way too many to list here and will all give you a great insight into being a student at Aberystwyth.

There seems to be the 2013 Aberystwyth Applicants starting to migrate over here now, for your benefit please read below regarding the accommodation application process.

The question was originally asked by meganmeadehi.

Do you get to choose what accommodation you live in? And can I choose if I want a single or bunk room?
You cannot specify which halls you want, you can only specify what type of room you would prefer.

What happens is you are asked to list out of 8 your preference. So number 1 is your most preferred and number 8 is your least preferred. There is a box to put any extra info like "I really really want Cwrt Mawr so pretty pretty please!". The options you have on the list are; self catered single en suite, self catered single, self catered budget single, self catered twin, self catered bunk, catered single, catered twin, catered bunk. Budget single is in Brynderw, it's halfway between main campus and town and doesn't have washing facilities onsite. Please be aware that if you want a en suite, those options are on campus or in the seafront residences. There were people on here earlier this year disappointed as they wanted Rosser (on campus) but got seafront after not realising they offered en suite as well.

Then in the town, it is widely said Aber has the most amount of pubs and bars per square mile in the UK. They of have promotional nights on different nights so you can have a pretty awesome night out for around the £10 mark if you visit where the offers are that night. The atmosphere around the town is buzzing, as I said to start this off the town is like a 10 year old on caffeine!

Let me put this in basic terms, Aber is like a goldfish bowl or the Aber Bubble as it is locally known as. In this bubble, put thousands and thousands of students along with the highest amount of pubs and bars per square mile in the UK (there's well well over 50 places, doesn't sound a lot but Aber is a small town), it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that the students will venture out of their halls and go to these pubs/bars! Thus making a awesome nightlife.

    Places to visit
Walking from campus, a typical night out for me would start at Aber Vaults for shots (cheap cheap cheap ), then onto Harry's for a beverage. After Harry's the choice is left or right. Right to Salt (cheap cocktails forever on offer) and Varsity (the mother of students for cheap cooked food in the day and cheap alcohol at night) or left to Cambrian is the next place to visit for one of their many cocktails (or make your own up) - a deathstar is one of the big hitters (£8.50 for two pints, pricey but rather smashing...).

After making your choice, its then up to Academy (getting a stamp at Yoko's on the way for later use). Academy is a bar in a rather unique building, its a converted Methodist chapel and has wonderful churchy things inside that are all tastefully lit up with coloured lighting. Academy is a good all rounder, cheap shots/cocktails and bottles. Out of Academy and into Yoko's next, beat the queue that would have formed by now by getting your arm stamp for quick entry. Yoko's has loads of offers on but be careful not to be stung at 12:30 when prices shoot up dramatically. When they do it's time for a trip down to the pier for Pier Pressure.

These are the two clubs in Aber, Yoko's (now branded as WhyNot) and Pier Pressure. Yoko's is free to enter and is on the small side so fills up fast and Pier charges but is much larger. I'm a Pier person personally and I try to get in before the certain times when the entry price increase. Entry is between £1.50 and £4 with your Aber Card.

Any night out in Aber is always a lively one, so don't worry about it being "really dead".

    Town in the day/other bits
Having a few friends studying different forms of Geography I'd like to point out that Aber isn't in the middle of nowhere as it has a coast, a rather beautiful coast aswell! But yeah, Aber is remote as it's the end of the road and train. You can't merely travel through Aber, you will be travelling to Aber specifically.

The town has everything you need in terms of shops, there are plenty of clothes shops to go around and food wise there is Lidl (a god send!), Iceland, Coop on the two shopping complex's around the train station. 3 (maybe 4) Spa's, the one nearest Salt/Varsity being 24/7, Very useful for snacks for the walk back up Penglais Hill after a night out.

Out of town there's a large Morrison's which is currently having a refurbishment so it may become a little larger in size. Then throughout the town are some wonderful independent food shops, for example Morgan's Butchers sell packs of bacon for £2.50 with around 10 slices in each. More expensive than the rubbish sold in supermarkets but this is proper butcher bacon, good quality thick stuff not fried wafer ham slices!

Looking back at this, this has wondered into food shopping away from nights out. Basically, Aber is awesome at night and in the day. You could very easily go out every night of the week and go to 5 or 6 completely different places every night, and still have a great night out.

Aber's a small town in the middle of nowhere....BORING!
    (Original post by Aek-94)
Aberystwyth as a town - on the contrary to what many people say - is an amazing student town. The nightlife is more centred around pubs and bars rather than clubs, although we do have two nightclubs (plus, the Student Union), but I much prefer that. As for shopping, most of the things you'd need are here, and for the things you don't there's always online shopping (something my flatmates have been using a lot). The idea that living in Aberystwyth is boring, because it's not a city, and in Wales, is completely untrue.

The university itself is also pretty good: some subjects are better than others, in terms of investment and the teaching staff, but there's no subjects which are considered bad here (my own department - the International Politics department - is regarding as the oldest of its kind in the world, and it has produced some good alumni. What subject are you thinking about doing?); the accommodation is, depending on which halls you pick, is also pretty good. I'm in Cwrt Mawr and we are nearby to all amenities (shops, laundry room, etc.), and our lecture theatres/ seminar rooms. Plus, living in halls you get to meet all sorts of people, it's great!
Above, posted by Aek-94 in reply to a question about Aber being boring.
