I have looked at noise cancelling headphones; but they're far too expensive.

Does anyone have any recommendations for in ear (ear phones) noise cancelling earphones please?

In ear headphones offer enough passive isolation that they don't active noise cancellation. In terms of what headphones to recommend, what's your bud he and at kind of music do you listen to?

They are so worth the money. My dad's mate has been round and has these bose ones, cost about £200. Listening to heavy electro and breaks on them is like being stood next to a massive stack, unbelievable. Probably give myself ear damage though!
