I've been accepted onto this course and wondered if anyone can recommend some readings that would be helpful before the course starts

Thanks for any help given.

Any 'How to study History' books will help you - for instance http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doing-Histor.../dp/0415565774
Or http://www.amazon.co.uk/Studying-His...ref=pd_sim_b_3

This is material that any History student needs to think about, regardless of specialism. Invaluable you getting your head around some of it before you start actual course reading.

PS. I have a PhD in History - I know what I'm suggesting is worth you doing.

Thanks for this. I've looked at both on Amazon and they have excellent reviews from students. I'm a mature student and both these books should help me get back into studying and writing essays.

Also, Richard Evans 'In Defence of History' is slightly harder going but worth reading at some stage in your first year. John Tosh "In pursuit of History' is easier going and also worth reading.

PS. Good Luck! I did my first degree at 30 - you'll have an amazing time - enjoy!

Thanks, returnmigrant. I'm looking forward to the course. And with so many of the young ones bleaching their hair my silver hair should blend in!
