I would advise against it. Fad diets suck. If you really do need to lose weight, exercise and eat less.

I shall not have a bad word said about the Atkins diet. However if you are serious about doing it i would advise that you buy the the book and read it all first. Knowing and understanding the science behind it will help you in the long run IMO. I did it for around a year and lost about 4 stones. As long as you dont stay at the induction stage for more than a month then it is a very healthy way to eat (and dont let anyone else tell you otherwise). After all, having every meal consisting of meat and vegetables is probably a healthier diet than around 80% of people on here have.

If you need any other advice feel free to ask

I would advise against it. It a way of life not just a diet. My sister has been on it for a while and now she cant come off it for fear that she'll put on weight. She also recently showed symptoms of diabetes that she never ever had before (not sure if its related though).

I'd always stick to the exercise and a balenced diet, cutting out junk food if you wish, so much healthier. Carbs are a great soure of energy, and i'm sick to death of just meat eggs being eaten in my house I WANT PASTA lol.

Yum bad breath is my favourite.

If you like fruit, then this aint the diet for you.

And plus if you dont have a big appetite it sucks as well because in the 3rd week I think it is you have to have salads before all your meals.
I have to do a boring essay on this...
I used to be totally against it but after reading up, it seems *slightly* acceptable, but only if you take multivitamins and exercise regularly. I think some people may think that being on a diet means they don't have to exercise but with the consumption of so much fat on this diet it is absolutely essential.
Atkins diet... the guy who invented it died of being a fat bastard didnt he? What a load of rubbish. Do you want to lose weight? Eat less fatty foods and eat more low calorie foods. Minimal saturated fat, cut down on sugary carbohydrates, eat plenty of fruit and veg and most of all.... get some exercise! regular cardio workout, do 30-45 minutes runs at least 3-4 times a week to start with and build up.
Carbs area great source of energy however of you don't burn them off then your body stores them as fat. Eats less carbs and you don't store unused carbs. I would say though cutting out carbs altogether is not what the atkins diet does it regulates the intake.

However I would personally and have done so, cut out wheat products altogether, this means bread, rice, biscuits etc and also I cut out potatoes. I lost weight that way. It also left me feeling less bloated.
It's bad for you! Halitosis, ketoacidosis etc you name it!
maybe for a couple of weeks its ok, i don't really know much about it. but really, the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat. which doesn't mean eat loads less (your body goes into starvation mode and releases energy really slowly), it means do loads more.

has anyone tried this? does it work? im contemplating trying it

Don't do it....my dentist told me she's on it, and i know they're the ones who are supposed to be worried about halitosis...but her breath stinks!!!!! I would advise 20 min cardio 2-3 times a week

That amount of excercise is not enough. You should be doing 3 times that amount and more importantly eating a healthy balanced diet. It's also worth noting you shouldn't eat to many carbs after 5 o'clock as if you don't burn them of they will stay there. Eat your complex carbs early in the day. Good protein is essential after excercising as this enables the body to repair damaged muscle. Also loosing weight is good but you have to ensure you are loosing the body fat and not the muscle. It's may be worth having a body fat check every month to ensure your burning off the right bits!

id say forget diets just eat more healthily and walk more than usual. i have recently lost a bit of weight for no aparent reason until i realised id been eating much less chocolate and more fruit and veg and water. ud be suprised how much healthier and slimmer you can become just by changing what you eat slightly.

nine 20min sessions of cardio is wayyyy too much....you need to give your muscles time to recover. However intensity of cardio does play a part in how much you do
Eat healthy, low impact aerobics and swimming works for me (with the exclusion of wheat)

Just shut the **** up, the lot of you, none of you have the faintest idea what the hell you're talking about so why even bother commenting?

To the OP: Atkins won't kill you, if you want to try it, go for it.
There has been quite a lot of bad press about it. I can't exactly say whether its good or bad cos I haven't tried it. It is better to just eat healthily and get some exercise rather than follow a set, restrictive diet.

I meant either 3 1 hour sessions or 4 45 min sessions. Intensity is also important. you should be working at about 50 -75% of your maximum heart rate.
