Medics - The Scum of Imperial?!

Hey all!

I recently recieved an offer for the medicine A100 course and was overjoyed, loved every bit of Imperial! However, recently I keep hearing all these silly rumour such as "Ohh you're going to be hated by the rest of the Uni for 6 years because you're a med student!" and "Nobody likes the med students at Imperial" and so on.

I know it's probably just a load of rubbish, but is there an air of truth to any of this? I remember on the tour one of the med students mentioned that there's rivalry between the med student sports teams and the other teams, but that was it. Can any current (or prospective) Imperial students provide their opinion on this?

Thanks alot,

- Omair

Medic Scum!!!
Erm...yea...we have some friendly banter, and some not so friendly banter. Its all game really.
Its just how you swing it really. You will find its much easier to just have medic friends all your time in Imperial. But that can be said about being a Chinese student at Imperial. Just don't be another medic be an individual you'll be fine. Still you won't be able to avoid the friendly "Medic Scum" once in a while.

Yeah, it's just friendly rivalry if you ask me. And sometimes even jealousy!
Reply 3
Jealousy? That never even occured to me heh! I'm not too sure why they distinguish so much between med students and other course students anyhow, we can't be all that alien now can we? :p:

Hey,

We better not be compltely hated by everyone. I have 4 friends going to imperial for non-medicine related courses, and I don't want to have to cut off all ties with them!
Reply 5
Yeah exactly, I have a good friend going going there too for an engineering course....but then again I guess you have to be prepared for the fact that you might drift apart from some good friends you had prior to coming to Uni since you'll both have completely different timetables and will start to meet different people.

yea to be honest i have heard stuff like that too...others include (!!) the medical school at imperial is very isolated, imperial is geeky and students there dont have a decent social life..
..but i personally think its as isolated or integrated as you make it. If we make an effort to socialise with non medics, through clubs, societies, halls of residence etc then surely we wont feel too isolated and hated! lol though it will probably be much easier for med students to be cliquey since the med school at imperial have their own student union, their own clubs etc

but im still reaaaaaaaaaaaally excited about imperial, i should really go and do some work now - i need the grades

take care all xx

hehe.. i tend to prefer non-medics personally (socially) as I get enough medic-talk during the day and don't want it continuing on till the evening! There are a few medics who just won't socialise or take part in anything which isn't associated with the med school but the majority are open and keen to be part of the "university", not merely the ICSM.

i know someone who does management for his BSc at imperial.
Yeah the whole BSc year sounds pretty awesome...you can do management at the Tanaka Business School apparantly...still have no idea what I would do!

Miles: well the medics I spoke to on my interview day all seemed really sociable and easy-going so I guess you're right, I was just wondering if the rest of the university tends to alienate them just for being med students!

Nope, its for not socialising with the rest of the university for the whole first month. tbh going off every night on 'medic' events during the first couple of weeks, ditching hall events and the people your meant to be living with is the best way to open yourself to abuse.
Now I understand that everyone wants to get to know people on their course etc, and a few course/faculty related events are good for everyone. I just think that the whole 'medic freshers fortnight' is actually to the detriment of everyone as it increases the 'cliquey attitude'.
I don't go along with the arguements that i've heard that reason theres no point really making friends with non medics because they won't always be there during your 6 years, mainly because lets face it after your 4th year you don't really spend anytime 'on campus' either.

Think basically what I'm trying to say is that traditionally medics have bought all the 'banter' on to themselves, and nobody will really care if your a medic or an engineer for example, so long as you see yourself as part of IC as a whole and socialise as if you are.

Spend the first week mainly getting to know the people you live with it (makes your life so much nicer in the long run).

Yeah, when I went up for my interviews, I just heard that the medics stay in their own 'group' most of the time.

unfortunately, the medical students do themselves little favours by forming cliques very early on in their IC lives (mainly to do with the Medic's Student Union being more organised than ICU and not integrating their freshers' events with IC). So the sociable medics (which there are more of this year, thankfully) are welcome with open arms, but the ones on my corridors whom i've spoken to about 4 times after moving in day and don't talk to anyone else do deserve all that banter they get on Varsity day!

People won't hate you for being a medic, but they will if you turn your nose up at the rest of the college and don't get to know anyone off our course.

jealousy?!?! What is there to be jealous about? Fit women? Sparce timetables? Multiple choice exams? Online exams you take at home? An actual Union that isn't @#$%? Fresher's fortnight?
Pah! We are Imperial we don't need none of that nonsence!

apparently most of that just applies 1st year medics though, so maybe the life of alcohol, sex and partying isn't as rampant as we thought

To be fair Eugene, I think the relationship with the ones on your corridor started to go downhill when you decided to tear up their Indian soc leaflets!

hey stop publicising my misbehavings on the internet!

I wasn't referring to the medics on my corridor, I actually get along fine with all of them (even if some of them may have been a bit rude about me to you)! I was more thinking of other corridors close to mine...

Just to set the record straight, none of the stuff came from people on your corridor. These sorts of things spread through the hall, heh. Don't worry about your misbehavings though, I found the whole thing hilarious.

Gimme the names that you were actually thinking of..

Which hall are you in? (...btw this is coming from a non medic, with many medic friends)
