Anyone else thinking of applying for biomed this year? (:

Any ideas where you'd like to go yet?

At the moment I'm considering Southampton, Kings, Reading, and Surrey. Well I know I definitely want Southampton... other than that I'm just looking around.

I'll add a list of everyone that's applying this year to the first post so that we can see who everyone is! (:

I wanted to do medicine too, had a crazy moment at the start of Year 12, and ended up doing English Lit, Philosophy, History and Drama.
Ended up really ill and had to resit. So I took a year off and then I decided while resitting (self taught, I decided not to go back to school) to pick up Psychology because I'd regretted my decision not to do the sciences and then Medicine since the end of year 12, despite okay AS grades in the subjects I had picked (AAAB). I knew by then it was too late for medicine so thought psychology would be the closest I could get to it as an undergrad. I got BBB in English Lit, Philosophy, and History - devastating when I was predicted A*AA before my health deteriorated in year 13 (I'd been ill since year 9 but until then I'd managed to self teach when I wasn't well enough to be in school) but these things happen. Got an A in my AS Psychology which I was really proud of considering I'd never had a lesson. Unfortunately in one of my A2 papers I really badly messed up, answered 2 of the essay questions wrong due to a misread. Ended up 1 mark off a B. :/

Anyway the long and short of it was that this year I did my research better, and decided that if I have to take another gap year to fix the mess I made of the Psychology Unit 3 paper, I wanted to actually follow my dream. I might not be able to do medicine any more but I can do biomed. So I'm now going to resit the paper I did the epic fail on, and I'm going to self teach myself Biology (AS&A2) and then Chemistry AS, and apply for 2013 entry! (I'll be a mature student but ah well, that's life.)

Sorry you really didn't know any of that, just felt like sharing haha. What did you get at AS if you don't mind me asking?

Oh wow I used to live in London, but since I finished school I've moved to Newcastle!

Hey, thanks for your reply. But that's what I'm predicted. In the subjects I'm carrying forward to A2 I got ABC. Would they look at the C and say no straight away?

Hey I'm applying for Biomed too !! got AAAB in my AS's (bio, RE, maths, chem) but realised that I'm really not passionate enough about medicine to apply, and I really like the sound of the career prospects after biomed, and I guess there's always the option of post grad medicine if I change my mind (very competitive though ). Hoping to apply to southampton, cardiff, st georges, UCL and king's, I like the look of the course at surrey though and it is accredited, so i'll probably change my mind about my uni choices :P

It's really good, you get a lot of choice after your first year in what area you might want to specialise in, or if you want to do a broad range of modules. The research at UCL is absolutely amazing, and you quite often some quite well known lecturers who have done a lot in their field. The support from the course organisers is perfect as well, they'll help you with anything and everything you can think of regarding your degree and future.

Nope they're more interested in your predicted grades! ^_^ I know someone that got into three AAB universities and one ABB with BBCD. As long as you get good references, the right prediction, and you have an amazing personal statement, your C won't hinder you. My partner got into maths at Kings which asks for AAA and a pass at AS with ABC and no extra AS, and that's one of the top uni's in the country. (I mean it might be different at like Oxford/Cambridge, but within reason. )

Ugh I would love to go to UCL but I'd never get the grades. (Not to mention I know they used to ask for a C in a language at GCSE and I got A*A*A*AAAAABB and then U in French. Languages are not my thing. *brain fail*) Pleased you're enjoying your course though.

Ah, on the topic of AS grades - i got BCC in AS (a bit of a shocker) but pulled it up to AAB. I applied to SGUL/QMUL/Sussex/Keele/Southampton, getting all fiver offers ranging from AAB --> BBC

I hope you feel much better now. So how old are you then? if you dont mind me asking.

Oh for my As subjects i got BBCCC. philosophy/chemistry/biology/maths/psychology. im going to take through maths, biology and chemistry.

Thank you, I'm really not, but thank you. I don't mind at all, I'm 20 (I'm a June birthday though so I haven't been 20 for that long hehe).

Sounds like a good plan! What grades did you get in those three specifically? ^_^

Hey guys I'm also off to southampton to study biomed this year, originally I went for medicine was unfortunate. I got AAA in chem/bio/philo&ethics last year but due no interviews I took a year out working at a hospital but this year still received no interviews for medicine . However, After seeing the course at Southampton things definitely started to look up, cannot wait to start now! I will hopefully be going for post grad medicine after too (37% of biomed graduates went on to do medicine at soton last year!) I'm also staying at Glen Eyre Chancellors Court. Any questions Feel free to ask!
