Define those universities you're referring to
say Cardiff, QB, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield, QMC, Manchester, Birmingham.

VS

Sussex, UEA, Lancaster, Bath, SOAS

( have to leave out St Andrews as they are fighting vs ICL, LSE etc )

I guess that's what BUCS is for (although saying that, those universities are scattered across the different leagues/groups in certain sports)

KCL and UCL ftw. The second oldest uni rivalry in England, and, in former times, the most brutal (full scale street fights were not uncommon once). It has cooled down in recent years. KCL LSE is about to become a big rivalry, as they will be (to my knowledge) the only Russell Group unis whose main campuses are literally across the street from each other.

I think there should be more rivalry between the big universities in the Midlands - Nottingham, Birmingham, Warwick.

A classic one would be Edinburgh vs Glasgow. A fun one would be St Andrews vs Dundee.

Do you go to Warwick? I have never heard of rivalrous sentiments in the opposite direction; London has enough universities among which to entertain rivalries.

Durham pisses all over Newcastle anyways
I have to disagree with that. Newcastle boasts a top Medical and Dental school, something which Durham will never have due to lack of resources. Other than Law, Durham doesn't even have any prestigious courses. It garners prestige largely for the few old buildings and tradition it has for being an Oxbridge rejects university.

Its not for lack of resources its lack of a city that can support a hospital. Besides, Durham's medical school sends its students to Newcastle after 2nd year anyways.

Durham vs St Andrews is a great rivalry in terms of which one wants to portray itself as the biggest half-assed rip off of Oxbridge. Edinburgh vs Glasgow is a more traditional clash of the titans, two large and ancient research powerhouses.

To be honest, there isn't a huge rivalry between the two as there is very little overlap between them due to their differences in course offerings. Aberdeen's probably competing more with Dundee, or Glasgow and Edinburgh to a lesser extent, than it is RGU, and RGU is probably competing with Heriot Watt and Strathclyde mainly, as opposed to Aberdeen.

I'm at St Andrews and there is not that rivalry. Rivalry does not necessarily have to be because they are of equal standing or ranking as unis.

The biggest rivalry and most talked about is St Andrews vs Dundee and mostly just involves St Andrews trashing Dundee when they are drunk.
