Does the whirring noise sound like it's coming from the DVD drive or the fan at the back?

Tried any other disks?

Is it very warm at all?

Does it make the noise without a disk in?

Do games work?
Phil.

The DVD drive I think, but then its a 'clacking' sound, so it could be the fan...?

One DVD, one game. THe DVD worked on another DVD player.

It gets quite warm, but not markably warmer than when it was healthy.

No, it usually takes a while before it starts whirring too.
Do games work?

Nope, brother tried to play a game yesterday (admittedly a battered old one).

Thanks btw...

I had a similar problem with mine, someone told me it was due to a dust build-up so I used my vacuum to clean it and left it to stand for a while and it worked after that. It might have just been luck in my case, but if all else fails have a try.

Sounds like the laser/motor has gone, but the above suggestion is worth a try.

Then freezes and sais it can't read the disk. What to do? I really want to watch a film tonight.

Ah.... I know what's wrong. Your motor has become misplaced. Bet you put it on it's side don't you. Give it a good bash, shake it and turn it upside down then the right way again and shout at it like I did (Which worked actually) Or for films, buy a copy of Region X and use it to load it up. Or you could try holding down the power button until it loads up.

lol. don't actually whack it. Does it eject properly and does the tray go back in the whole way? if you keep it vertical a lot or if you've dropped it recently, the tray could be misaligned. If you have someone who knows how to open a ps2, get them to open it up, or do it yourself and check the tray.

Also cleaning it out isnt a bad idea, but don't use a vaccum, it can suck up small parts and believe me, there are plenty of them inside the ps2. use canned air or just blow on it and pick out bits of dust.

its an incredably common problem with early playstation 2's. mine did the same thing. its to do with the laser becoming slightly misaligned or something.

did you get ur ps2 second hand or within a year of its release?

If your PS2 is slimline, Id be interested in buying it as I can get it repaired and chipped for £5-£10

I've had my trusty Mega Drive for 12 years now and never had a problem with it, I've had 2 problems with my PS2 and only had it 2 years.

I had this problem with my original PS2 too. It stopped reading DVD Videos, then ROMs, then CDs. The solution was quite simple though: used it as an excuse to get a slimline.

Try this Oppressed mass. Make sure you cover the lens first. Get one of those disposable cloths that pick up dust with static and wipe your disc tray over with it. Then do the same with the back of the PS2. This will solve any problems that may be dust related. If still no results try putting a small amount of blue tack thinly spread underneath the disc tray and hold down the reset button until the disc loads.

Thanks for all the help. I employed what can only be described as ghetto PS2 repair techniques. That is, I blew in all the holes. It appears to have worked!

SEE GHETTO TECHNIQUES DO WORK! I've got 2 neg reps for telling people to use techniques, and all I've had is people telling me to stop sayiing rubbish, but I have owned games consoles for 15 years and believe me I know what to do with faulty ones. In your face, Techno freaks and repairmen!
