A-Level Accounting

Hi, Can somebody tell me about ALevel Accounting. Whether it is easy or hard? Im still thinking about whether I should choose it or not.

I have an A grade in GCSE Maths and a B in GCSE Business Studies. I've heard some people saying that it is a 'soft' subject which unis dont embrace a lot.

However, can you please give me some information on it. Also, the exam board is AQA. Im not going to be doing this at my sixth form college but instead at a private centre where I will enter as a private candidate.

I appreciate all responses, thanks in advance.

It was one fo the easiest A-levels I took, however that's not to say that I didn't revise. My university accepted it and it was in the top 15 for accounting. It's worth having a look at as it helps if you are going to be taking it at university.

You wont really need to be so good at math. It's just adding, subtracting, multiplying. The hardest thing you will find is getting the technique right for each type of question.
But when you get it, complete practice exam questions, it is fairly easy.
This is got AS, I'm not sure about A2.

Thank You for your response, but do you think it will be difficult for me to learn it on my own. Would it best to get a tutor, or will it be simple from the revision book to pick everything up.

Why are you doing it privately when you don't need it for university or grad schemes?

You might need to get a teacher as some aspects are hard to understand. Such as the double entry booking, I would have found this aspect hard just by looking at a book.
But other are easy such as cash flow forecasting, they can be done on your own
I was thinking to take a gap year so that I could apply to good unis like LSE and Warwick for accounting and finance. My current A-Levels are: Maths, Economics, Business Studies, Applied ICT. During the year, I am considering of doing the full A-Level of Accounting and AS Further Maths self-teach. The reason for this is that I have got 2 soft subjects plus both Economics and Business Studies which are not preferred by these unis (I wish I had known this before as I would not have done B.S. or ICT).

I was hoping for your input on whether this is a good idea? I have some experience in the accountancy field as i have previously worked at PWC.

Thank you in advance

If you really want to go into accounting you could also consider applying for a school leaver's scheme with one of the big 4, which is what I have done. But regarding your question it really depends whether you want to use a year for a chance to go for the best universities or to save a year and go for a slightly less prestigious uni. So really you need to question if you are willing to use an extra year of your life or not.
Hi,

I thought it might be useful for you to hear from us regarding our School Leaver opportunities. We offer 4 different programmes for School Leavers which offer routes into accountancy whether you choose to attend university or not. You do not have to have studied accountancy to apply to any of these programmes. If you did decide to take a gap year we would look to see what you had done with this year and how it had helped you to develop the skills we look for from our School Leavers. You can find out more online at www.ey.com/uk/careers

Hi,

Is accounting A level a big advantage for joining a school leaver program?
hi
Just a quick question for everyone here.
What Accounting Student Book did you use?
Most A-level accounting books I can find are either Revision books or International student books. What resources do you recommend for selfstudy?

A whole ten years later from the start of the thread and a year late to your question but if there happens to be someone looking for a revision guide in the years to come then I’d say My Revision Notes AQA A-level Accounting (David Lewis)

But you kinda need to know the content already- you cant learn from it per se but it does help top up your current knowledge.
