Broadgate Park Accommodation

Can anyone please tell me about the different types of accommodation at Broadgate Park? There seems to be more avaliable on the accommodation application form on the net than what it says in the undergrad accommodation book...

Also, is Broadgate privately owned?

Thanks in advance

This site tells you about the different room-types on Broadgate...

Broadgate Park is leased off the University by UPP Ltd.

None of the self-catering accom at Nottingham is run by the Uni anymore.

BGP is UPP Ltd, Raleigh Park in Derwent Living, and St Peters is Unite Housing.

Hey, I'll break it down for you just 'cos I'm nice!

Standard - This is the cheapest and most basic accomodation. If you're looking for just somewhere to catch a few hours kip a night, this is probably best. You simply get a room in a single sex flat of about 5 or 6, a bathroom and I *think* two toilets to share between the flat. Unfortunately, you don't get any kitchen appliances like a toaster or microwave. But you DO get a fridge! Wow!!

Standard Plus - If you want something middle ground, apparantly all standard plus accomodation has been refurbished within the past 5 years (I don't believe them, but oh well!), but it is a lot nicer than standard. You usually get carpeted floors in the hallways, nicer kitchens, sometimes bigger rooms and kitchen appliances included and maintained.

En Suite - If you can afford it, I'd definately recommend going for one of these. All en-suite blocks are two years old or less, and you get your own bathroom with a shower, toilet and washbasin. No need to worry about running across the hall to throw up after a big night out! ;o). The rooms and kitchens are also really nice too.

Studio - DON'T go for these if possible. They're for loners! You do get your own bathroom and kitchen in your room, but it will make you very unsociable! Although brand new and very nice, I'd say avoid!

Any other questions, just ask. I'll be hanging around Broadgate next year anyways as a Karni rep! Woo!

Not if you want to socialise at all. First year is all about forming your group of friends for the next 2/3 years. If you have a studio, I think you'll get left out. There's also the issue of who would you live with in 2nd/3rd year? Flats of people tend to get houses with each other as they already know each other.

The studios are really aimed at PostGrads, who want/need a little more privacy. I'd go for en-suite personally.

Ok, but isn't having a studiop gonna be a small part. your gonna meet new ppl on ur course and ull meet ppl when u go out, u surely dont spend all ur time in the halls. What about nights out in nottingham!?

Also, what if you like the idea of self sufficiency, and u don't have to share a kitchen with ppl hu might leave it dirty, they think some1 else will clean it.

And i'm thinking of staying at home for the seocnd and third year anyway...

By all means go for a studio if you wish, but remember a lot of the time you make friends in Broadgate Park via people socialising in the flat - more specifically, the flat kitchen where you might have 10 or so people sitting round having a laugh. You probably won't be able to do this in studio flats.

Also, think about the practicalities. Example: You're cooking a nice meal, yet it also smells really potent! That smell will linger in your room for DAYS! Do you really want to be cooking smelly food in the same room you have to sleep in that night?

As for leaving the kitchen dirty, you always have cleaners that come round once a week and usually do a good job. If worst comes to worst, leave a polite notice up for your flatmates! I've found it works! And if that fails, well... a little door knocking and a talking to never hurt anyone.

AND SIMEON... I STILL DONT KNOW WHO YOU AREEE!!!!
SIM!!!! HAHAHAA Sorry mate, I didn't get it at first! I thought you were my friend Simon from BGP (who had spelt his name wrong!). I have you in my sight now... mwahahahaha

So you find people staying up at night having a drink in communal kitchens?

I sorta get ur point now

Also, in communal kitchens do you tend to cook on your own or in a group, and u serve up?

And, are the appliances in a communal kitchen better than the kitchenettes?

It's up to you if you decide to cook for yourself every night or split so you cook for everyone say, once a week. xx

Yeah, some people (such as my alcoholic self) stock up on booze from the spar shop before hand. Go to the bar, and when kicking out time comes, theres always a chance for people to go back to someone's kitchen and finish off the drinks. Students... going to bed at 11:30?! Nah! And a lot of the time it's with your flatmates - not really this opportunity in studios im afraid.

Social cooking is really nice. I always shop and cook with one of my flatmates, which works out a hell of a lot cheaper and we might do a big social meal for 5/6/7 people maybe once or twice a week, and its just a nice time to hang out with people having dinner.

Kitchen facilities are slightly better in the communal kitchen; bearing in mind there's hardly ever a time when everyone uses the kitchen at the same time. You get 4 hobs (instead of two), two big fridge/freezers and 2 or 3 cupboards for each person. So more space to store your things too.

Hope I've been some help, and persuaded you not to go for a studio!!
