North Hill Court vs. Lupton vs. Devonshire

I'm just looking at doing accomodation forms for Leeds (have chosen their offer as my first choice - ABC to do Popular Music BA)

I've been flicking through costs and facilities and trying to make a reasonable decision. A cheap residence is fairly important to me as I don't have much money and want to keep as much as I can towards my socialising and backpacker travelling habits!

North Hill Court is a small residence inbetween James Baillie and Devonshire. At the moment it has no internet access, but as of next year it will be cabled up to the uni network. It is £2200 for a seasons acc. compared to £3150 at James Baillie, so the saving is significant. Does anyone have any info about it, any pictures or even any second hang info?

Lupton is slightly further away from the campus than I would like, but it also seems to offer a fairly good budget price and I have been told there's quite a party atmosphere (which is a GOOD THING in my books..) is this true?

Devonshire sounded ideal as I am a Pop Music student and it has music practice rooms, but have heard it's got a bit of a 'rah rah' aura about it, and they do not allow private parties etc.

Any info on any of these places, or even James Baillie Park as well, would be v. much appreciated.
Everyone i've spoken to who goes to Leeds or has been has told me Lupton, due to the best value for money, yes the party atmosphere! & the fact that it's in Headingly. Close to shops and a bit more parking apparently? Plus the fact it's self-catering, who wants to be cooked for at set times lol xxxxx

ive heard really good things about north hill courts. they are about thirty quid less per week to jbp where im living (darned wretched place) and the rooms look rather delightful.
im at lupton at the minute and i love it, its really clean and our block was refurbished last summer so its well nice. its really close to shops and bars in headingly and alhough it might be abit far from the uni it is a walkable distance, i walk every day and it takes 30mins but there are also loads of buses if you dont want to walk.
Hey Miss Buttercup...
I've applied to Lupton so am relieved to read what you say! Just one thing I was worried about was the bathrooms/toilets. Are they really horrible? How many do you share between cos i can imgaine cues in the morning? lol Sorry just am worried. P.S. Do you have ne piccys of Lupton at all? Cheers xxx:smile:

hey, the bathroom in my flat (and infact in every flat ive seen) is lovely, theres 2 sinks, a toilet cubicle and a shower cubicle. you only share between 5 and i can honestly say ive never had to wait more than 10 mins to get into the shower and waiting of any kind is really rare. any other questions? happy to help

Thank you very much! That sounds ok then! Is it just the refurbished lot that are nice? I only have a conditional so even if i get in i may not get into Lupton hehe. Thank for ya help :-) xxx
Lupton is brilliant and heres a little secret if you're worried about refurbished or not, when I was there (2004/05), all the people who put Lupton as their first choice got in the refurbished ones...the ones who got the unrefurbished flats were either ones who came on clearing or missed out on one of the other halls. Mind you I don't know if theres any still unrefurbished.

The showers are great, instant hot water and the power is like water cannon. Best shower I've ever had. It's one bathroom between 5 people but it was never a problem when I was there, remember people are in uni at different times so its not like 5 people fighting for the showers before 9am.

If you are looking for good value I doubt you can beat Lupton, and either you can get fit with the 30 min walk in every day or get a bus pass, theres buses every 5 mins down the road opposite. The other convenient thing is you have the Headingley Arndale centre on your doorstep, Somerfield, Wilkinsons, Post Office, newsagents etc.

It's true, you do get fit walking that road everyday, I can run twice as far as I could 6months ago!
My flat isn't the nicest in Lupton, but its still decent compared to what many people expect. It's kinda like an ikea showroom haha. The rooms are such a good size. The only thing about my block is the fridge and freezer aren't big enough for 5, but in other blocks there's plenty of room.
the showers are ace, the temperature is always good!

Does anyone have any photos of the rooms in North Hill Court? I cant find any anywhere!
Since its cheaper than the other places (£54-£64 a week), I'm worried about what it's like coz I couldn't get to the visiting day...

Please can you give me some more info about the place/what you have heard about it, and whether its any good or not?!

hey lynnette. one of my friends was in north hill court last year and they said that you definitely get what you pay for there - rooms get really cold in winter, smallest kitchens of all university accommdation, really weak showers and stuff like that. apparantly lupton is almost the same price and they have decent sized kitchens, good showers and a good community vibe.
good luck with your decision

I'm in Lupton now, leaving in 3 weeks and I do not want to go!! I've had possibly the best year of my life and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of coming here.
hey. North Hill Court really doesn't seem bad for the price of it- it's right next to James Baillie (actually on the same site) and the rooms (from what I've seen looking through windows!) actually look quite nice- theyre reasonably sized and look clean, etc. Obviously I cant comment on how they are in the winter or what the showers are like!

I'm at Lupton and I can honestly say we never have a problem with the cold. You can adjust your radiator in your own room and even if you'd left the radiator off on a cold day with the windows open... your room can be uncomfortably hot within half an hour of turning it up!

The showers really *are* fantastic here too... I really havent had a shower like it anywhere else- even in the nicest of hotels!

The room sizes at Lupton vary quite a bit, but on average theyre better than most other halls (at least devonshire and james baillie). The furnishings in the rooms are as new as those in James Baillie (and a lot newer than in devonshire), as I believe that all the rooms in Lupton have now been refurbished. The furniture is great- integrated desk/cupboards/drawers with so much storage!

yes Lupton has been refurbished and has great atmosphere actually i know miss buttercup in my block!! however it is 2:10 and i am ant watching coz our flat has had a case of ants, ant man came today, didn't work. Just like to mention only one other flat has had this problem, i don't even have any food in my room so i suggest they get out my room i have nothing for them. dnt letput u off, weeks till we have to move out only problem i have had. And it can be sorted but i am slightly scared of them, hence my neurotic behaviour of ant watching!! put it this way this has not put me off lupton, i don't actually want to move into house next year coz halls are so great and ant watching is part of the fun. showers are ace the shower in our house is gonna be no where near as good!! Lupton is ace and you should definitly apply anyone who came for accom viewing day can see that it has a great atmosphere. So choose lupton and if you have ants take refuge in the middle of your bed my flat mate assures me they do not come in the bed, although i think tomorrow night i will stay on a friends floor. but come to lupton you will have the best year of your life!!! just figured they are afraid of the light so keep your lights on!!!

Hi, not to wake up an old thread or anything... but am still wondring about north hill court... GOOD or BAD?
Just got to lupton. I´m here at 15 days in a postgraduate block, the conditions and the surroundings are fab (supermarket and pubs at a pyjama distance) . I don´t see much of the party environment (quite calm, actually), but maybe that´s because of the block I'm in (a postgraduate one). Either way me and the mates will organize a barbecue to get to know people. Yes, I do recommend Lupton.

all the best
