Its all a matter of opinion.
Personally, I still love 5th Ave despte it playing the same stuff a lot of the time. I still don't get the whole Robbos/Bop thing. They're popular, but just seem like hell to me.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of opportunities to sample a helluva lot of places during your time here though - its the best way

Is Manchester a culturall place, i.e. music (also classical), museums, art,...?
Personally my favourites are Jilly's and Mutz Nutz. But it totally depends what you're into. I wouldn't be seen dead in M-Two or Tiger Tiger, for example, but they are likely to be many other people's favourites.

Its a damn sight more cultured than me!!

Aside from your usual clubs and pubs, there's the bridgewater hall which puts on lots more cultured stuff than I could ever imagine, the Lowry at Salford Quays also puts on lots of performances and concerts.

Theres a few theatres, like the palace and the contact. The Palace puts on big shows; the contact puts on smaller shows, but unsurprisingly, i haven't been to them either.

The Cornerhouse is a really trendy cinema whihc puts on non-box office films - Quentin Tarrantino has been there!

The northern quarter is a different kind of culture - more indie/retro culture, with nice bars that play up and coming bands like the night and day and the roadhouse. Theres also the Frog and Bucket there - a famous comedy club whihc has been a starting place to an awful lot of the north west's comedians like Peter Kay, Caroline Aherne and Dave Spikey. There's also a comedy club in Deansgate whihc has a great reputation.

Museums... i've been to urbis and manchetsre museum. i thought urbis was rubbish, though manchester museum was quite good.

Theres the Whitworth art gallery and the Manchester art galery in the centre, whihc are also supposed to be good. But not being much of an art lover, i haven't been there.

Finally, theers lots of nice buildings in the centre - John Rylands Library is a really nice place (I HAVE been there!!) and the town hall is also really nice architecture.

I'm sure others will be able to tell you more, as you might have guessed i haven't visited half these places.

Haha, I like them. Maybe I'm soulless. Frankly, Jilly's scares me... Maybe I'm a sissy as well.

I’d personally say the best night out to be had in Manchester is 5th Ave.
i used to be a tiger tiger hater, but after the school disco night there i'm converted lol

not been to twisted elegance, i've heard its a wee bit pretentious. and u gotta dress classy

i like sankeys too, only been a couple of times though, but each time was amazin. really good crowd in there.

most of my nights out are spent in 42s and 5th ave however! need to try more places i think...

5th Ave was the best night out, but too many people figured that out. Trying not to sound pretentious, it pretty much always plays the same stuff and is always rammed. Its still good for the occasional night out but I went pretty much every week in first year.

5th Ave is ok once a month or so, 42's has got too pretentius for me now, they just look down on outsiders etc.

I like the Brickhouse because it is more of a bar but with a dance floor.
hehe the brickhouse!!
i went there a few times last year, great moosic, but usually half empty, and the door staff seem to have a problem with anyone under 30!

i can't reccomend that place to students, its full of old people mostly, that probably went to the hacienda when they were young 10 years ago or more (not sure if you fall into that category AT82 :p: )

I've never had a problem with the door staff, they have always been nice and polite. I am 23 and was 21 when I first went there.

I agree it can often be quiet but that is half the charm, you don't always want to be stuck in the cattle market that is 5th Ave or 42's or be stuck in some over priced so called trendy bar with candles on the tables.

I remember the good old days when 5th Ave was only 2/3 full and 42's was so quiet during the week it would be freezing, I am only going back 2.5 years as well.
hehe maybe it was because on the occasions we did go it was in a fairly big group of mainly lads!

i'm not too fond of 5th ave these days, unless im wasted :p:

i can reccomend a club called south http://www.south-club.co.uk/
haven't been there for ages either, not sure if my mates from this year would appreciate it  tends to get a bit of an older crowd in there too i think. clint boon and some guy from emmerdale dj in there lol

I have been to South when Hooky from New Order was DJ'ing, it is a good club but is quite pricey, admision can be £8 on a saturday.

I may be getting old but a lot of my saturday nights seem to be spent in my local Irish club these days

5th Ave is good once in a blue moon, go there often and it will irritate and bore you.

42's is just up itself, my sister goes there a lot and the people there really think they are better than anybody else.

I'll be going to manchester in september to start uni, picked it solely on its club scene reputation, even over the course! i spose its cheaper up there than where i live in south east, how much wud be a typical night out...£40-£50 mayb? (including a club and a few good bars )

as a student spending £40-£50 is incrediably hard... needless to say you would be very very skint as the end of term approaches.

Reasonably I would say £20, would get you there and back, in, put your coat away, drunk and enough for cheesy chips on the way home.
42s can swing both ways - its either great, or really, really crap!

I took my housemate for the first time the other week, and she hated it for the first hour as it was dead, then it picked up, and she loved it. Had one of the best nights, met about 50 Irish people (yey!) and it was just completely random! Love its.

I'd recommend The Late Room on a Saturday night, although it is like a hot box, its cheap to get in, cheap drinks, and it plays really good music. Plus the DJ actually plays your requests!
£50 would get you very wasted in most student clubs in manchester!

if you go to the non studenty clubs n bars then you could easily spend that much - sankeys is usually about a tenner in, and 3.60 for a bottle or somethin daft like that

my average is about 25 quid i reckon.

oh yeh, the late room! been there a couple of times. nearly started a fight in there  but other than that tis great. nice doorstaff i seem to remember, said i looked younger than my age

what is it with cheesy chips?! i just don't see the attraction
Reply 18
Cheesy chips is another gripe I have with 42's fans, they all eat them

I spend between £20-£25, that is another for around 8-10 pints, club entry and a burger.

I really don't understand the attraction of places like Sankeys but then it is not really my culture.

I thought Sankeys was a real let down. Saw the Audio Bullies there late last year, and had it not been for them I would think the club would be completely boring. Plus, the drink prices are absurd.
