Interrailing by one's self.

I've seen a few threads about interrailing on here and most of you seem to have an interrail buddy however I would rather go on my own as I get to meet more people, be more independant and do whatever the hell i like. My plan is to go on my own but meet up with friends who will be interrailing in various cities. My only concern is safety. Is is dangerous to interrail on your own? Has any one else here done it?
I want to do the same thing, but traveling alone worries me also... I hope someone out there can give us some advice.

Even in silly places like Slovakia, Bosnia, Croatia and Macedonia I haven't had any problems. As long as you're not stupid enough to stick out like a sore thumb as a gullible tourist, you'LL be fine.

Thanks but is it any more dangerous with regards to staying alone in a mixed dorm in hostels etc. I'm female so do you think it will be any more dangerous?
I,too, am female... I was planning to stay in single sex dorms...

I think you'd have to have a pretty dim view of humanity to assume that every man you meet is a rapist.

Take care with drinks, don't put yourself on display and you'll be fine. How many instances of people running into trouble during interrailing are there vs the number of people who go and have a great time?

I don't have a dim view of humanity... I just want to know what other people have experienced. Also it is a proven fact that women traveling alone are more likely to be attacked/mugged than women traveling in a group.

Yes, but it woud be naive not to take precautions such as sleeping in a single sex dorm.

To the OP, when one is one in number and it it is one in the morning, then don't walk around one of the streets in the city one is visiting!

That's what I wanted to say but I just couldn't put the words together...

I always specifically ask to be in a mixed dorm, it's more fun. I've never felt unsafe. The worst that's happened is an annoying American guy whispering "Please, come down here... just for a minute" all night and trying to climb to my bed, but he was harmless - just a bit desperate

OMG, I would have slapped his face and requested to move rooms... but then again I am a prude.

Travelling alone and sleeping in dorms isn't really a problem. It's unlikely you'll meet one bad character, but what are the chances of a whole room full of them? Pretty low, I'd say.

The only time watch out is if you're walking around quiet areas, off the beaten track, where there's not many people around. Generally, if it's busy, the worst you should be vigilant of is pickpockets. If it's quiet, there's the threat of something more serious, especially if it's late at night. But hey, who wants to visit the quiet areas?

I told him to **** off and smacked him with a pillow. It didn't work. Then I went to my friend's bed but that definitely didn't work ("Oh yes! Lesbian action! What are you girls doing there? Let me see!"). Then I remembered I've got ear plugs (might come really handy when staying at hostels!) with me and put them on and slept happily

Edit: Even thogh I did have a friend at that time, I've been to hostels by myself too and in that situation or in any other wouldn't have felt unsafe.
I hope he didn't give you a poor opinion of all Americans, LOL! Most of us are nice....

Don't worry, he's not the only American I've met

And he's not even the most horrible person I've met in a dorm. In Riga our hostel was above a striptease club and there was this middle aged Latin American man that went to the strip club every night (he didn't say it -he couldn't speak English, French or German when we tried to communicate with him- but he went out every night without his coat and we saw him smoking and chatting to the bouncers at the entrance of the clubs many times), came home drunken, threw up every morning, SMELLED HORRIBLE, never showered and slept in his underpants (not a pretty sight!).

But still, we didn't feel unsafe - we just wished he'd shower even once
