Press up help

Hi everyone, I am training for my Army RCB ( Regular Commissions Board) which is a test to admit potential officers into Sandhurst. Being female one of the physical tests, among many is 21 press ups in 2 minutes:p: . This might sound easy, but I am having some real trouble managing to do them in one go (you can have rest, but must stay in the pressup position). The thing is I can do 100 pressups, if I do them in sets of 10 with a 30 second break shaking my arms etc:confused: , but when I try to do them straight off I lose my form after about 16 or 17, and collapse to the floor like a sack of potatoes.

I would really like some tips on how to improve my press ups, anything will help, technique, other exercises I can do to practise etc:smile: and just some good old fitness tips. its just I have been working on them with all my other fitness stuff for weeks and they have shown no improvement (I must be doing something wrong) and I really want to make a good impression by showing how I can take control of my fitness.

Thanks for any suggestions

you say your max is 17 in one go. every week try and increase it by 2. see if that changes anything

what worked for me, was i would do my press ups really slowly, like 2 secs to get down and 2 secs to get back up, although you'll only do about 8 do this 4 times a day for a week and then try repping out, you should definitely see some inprovement

hope this helps and good luck with the RCB, remember catch up on world affairs

If you can do 17 in one go, just have a break, and then do another 5 or whatever. Easy.

When you're resting, try to shift as much weight as possible from your hands to your legs. That should allow them to rest long enough to you to do another few press ups.

Just do 3 sets of as many pressups as you can. Have 1-2 minutes rest in between each set and just keep doing it everyday until you build it up. If you are working properly there is no reason why you shouldnt improve.

Bloody ruperts.

what regiment/cap badge?

have you tried using those handles which you can get which you hold onto?

they give you about 15cm or so of extra depth to the pressup. if you can manage quite a few on these and then do normal pressups without the bars, it is so much easier.

i got some nike ones from jjb sports i think, only about a tenner.

Don't forget Luce that you have to have your elbows in and that you can't move your hands once you have started banging them out and you rest. Keep your head up too and look straight ahead, this allows you to get lower.

Also try practicing "diamond" pressups where you have both of your thumbs and index fingers touching in front of your body, not easy, but they work a different set of muscles that might help overall I'm told.

Hey again guys, thanks steve for the hands tip … ahhh that’s a bummer, will have to practices doing them like that. At the moment I am looking at REME or the RA, I have been on the RA fam visit ( 1 day) and really liked it, but am not entirely sure yet.

As for the comments on the army are making money out of soliders etc. WMD etc… I do not believe this is so, yes no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq but in my opinion the importance of being an officer is to lead your men, and to do so in the safest means. Whether or not you agree with the motives for war it does not matter, protecting your men and their welfare should be of utmost importance – not petty politics. Overall the aim is to get the best situation for the civilians we are fighting for and represent – not to make money. But anyway this thread was about press ups not motives for joining or not , supporting the army.

Yep, nobody likes a REMF lol. RA are my second choice.

when i was training for RSC (no longer have to do press ups though) i just kept increasing the number by one each day! surely you can push yourself to keep good form for that extra one and before you no it, after a week you'll have added an extra 7 press ups to your routine and you will find yourself developing stronger and maintaining good

RA and REME are all remfs  have you considered a sex change and join the infantry? we take anyone these days!

I think you'd get more qualifications out of REME. Also maybe better chance of gong on tours? Do RA deploy to iraq and afghan that much? I wouldnt think there was a great need for them? maybe there is.

The only way to get better is practice. There is nothing wrong with taking a break. Try doing 14. Rest. Then bang out the rest.

When I go for 44 I always rest for a few seconds at 30, 40 and so forth.

Er, you do know that a FOO is the most wanted man on the battle field don't you!? Recce mechs get amongst the action though to be fair.

They deploy in a dismounted role when not in their primary role. Have done a FIBUA ex with some RA lads who were deploying in the dismounted role.

BTW did you do the RRU course to become pl signaller? My PC has confused me as to what I have to do in order to get out of stag, I mean, erm, get myself a pack to carry *ahem*

Haha, no, I'm a recce soldier (as in the "recce platoon" in NI if you know what I mean..?) we have 2 signallers in the platoon hq, but im in an escort team.

You just need to do the RRU cadre and ask your boss can you be pl signaller when theres a space. Although you wont get out of getting your mag on and stagging on, cos you'll have to do radio stag. Oh, and as I'm sure you know everyone hates pl signallers, cos you cut about diishing out 351 batteries to blokes and everyone'll think you're a ****.

what regiment are you?
