why am i always so thirsty?

hi everyone

like the titile suggests, im always thirsty - no matter how much water i drink, my thirst is never satisfied for more than 30 seconds
i mean, i cud go thru 5(or probably more) 500ml bottles of water in an hour and still b thirsty at the end of it

im not very active physicslly- and i rarely sweat

its been like this for the past maybe 4 or so yrs

i used to b anorexic maybe about 3 years back , and am now bullimic
but i dont think it cud have caused this

does anyone know why this happens or have any suggestions on how to solve the problem?

thanks

I think I'm right in saying this could be a symptom of diabetes - but you must go and see your doctor

Get checked out for diabetes. Your problem sounds just like that of my sister before she was diagnosed with diabetes. And when you get checked, make sure they test your blood and urine - my sister had been for tests before and they only tested urine, they came back negative. It wasn't until she collapsed they tested her blood, which came back positive.

On the subject of diabetes, I always need to pee really soon after a drink. I'm not particularly thirsty (will maybe drink a 500ml bottle water at school and 2 glasses at home) and I put on weight really fast but I;ve just managed to lose it all now.
The thing that really bothers me is that sometimes, mostly after I go to sleep for 20 mins or so (we're talking napping here, not SLEEPING) I wake up feeling really dizzy and my heads banging and doesnt stop until I eat either a meal or something sugary.
I thought i might have diabetes for a while. Should I still bother to check it out.

Might be worth getting checked out, sounds like a dip in your blood sugar level.

Diabetes is certainly an option. and in this case u need to see a doctor however difficult it is as diabetes needs to be caught early or it can be really really serious even fatal.

Also whilst you might feel that bullemia is not to blame (I know the two things seem very different) it really could be. bullemia is an illness which can have serious effects on your health - basically it messes up your body big time. Long periods of eating disorders lead to further complications with your health and this constant thirst could be a symptom for something much worse. i urge you please go to the doctor. and open up completely - you readily admit to being bullemic so you'v taken the first step - you should get help.

good luck

It doesnt matter how much the doctors costs, this could be serious! Surely thats more important...

Were not doctors, so we can't tell you whats wrong!
It could well be abnormal sugar levels. You ought to have a general blood test.

me too, i need to pee really quickly after a drink and i wasnt honest when i said 5 bottles, its more like 7 or 8 - i know that sounds crazy.

i also didnt mention that if i go without water( mayb like for 30 mins or somethin), then my head starts to pound like crazy and i feel dizzy when i try to take a few steps or try to stand up or sit down( but it rarely ever bothers my sleep)

i too at times have the urge to have some sugar- especially by night-time

i guess firedeuce and i have some common symptoms or at least it certainly sounds like it

All the symtoms you are giving are a clear pointer to the onset of type I diabetes...The thirstiness is due to high blood-sugar which causes an insufficient ammount of ADH to be released (something to do with the saturation of the blood being altered by the sugar - and ketones [i'm not a biologist]). The sugar cravings can be a sign of insulin fluctuations in a pancreas which is failing. The pounding head ache is also a sign of high blood sugar.

This is very serious and you should get it checked immediately - running high blood sugar causes catastrophic organ damage in the longrun and can cause blindness and kidney failure. GET IT CHECKED!

when you are being sick you loose a massive amount of fluid, namely water. i think your bulemia has a bigger influence on your thirst than the diabetes idea. i think you need to target the bulemia asap, this is the most likely explaination. also, it would be good to do this even as a trial to see, because if you say you can't afford going to the doctor then you don't want to waste money. also, it will be healthy to stop being sick!

the fact you cant afford a doctor at the mo means you might need to tackle the bulemia yourself. i know this will be extremely difficult, especially seeing as you were anorexic, but i think you should put extra effort into trying. how about striking a happy medium and eating enough and exercising? i dont know if you need to loose weight but being sick is not the way to go about it.

you are not entirely alone, i am sure your family will be happy to help and will understand and you've got all of us here on tsr who are more than happy to help you

The need to urinate immediately after drinking fluid makes it seem more likely to be diabetes. As someone pointed out before bulemia must put a huge strain on the body - anyone with a propensity for diabetes could bring on its onset with such a condition, as blood suger levels fluctuate constantly with constantly eating and vomiting. My father has struggled with diabetes for most of his life - it's definitely something you want to try and control sooner than later.

She was drinking water constantly and eating lots of sugary stuff. Like I say, she only had a blood test after she collapsed. She was in the pub when she collapsed, I think they were checking her blood to see if her drink had been spiked and discovered it by accident.

It doesnt sound stupid at all. trust me. my sister was and still is to an extent anorexic and it does really get to the family. but worse for family is knowing how long its been without them knowing and being able to help. if it would upset them it is because they care about you.
may i ask are you trying to lose weight or stay maintain. either way bullemia will never help you.

you have 2 clear possibilities-
it's either that the bullemia is causing adverse sideaffects with excessive thirst being a symptom for this. Or that you have developed a type of diabetes which could be incredibly serious if not attended to. AND which will be aggravated by the dramatic changes in sugar levels which will stem from your bullemia. Either way you must see a doctor! i really recommend you turn to a family member (you'd be suprised they may already have suspicions- i know my family and i did). your health is much more important than money and i am sure any major treatment would be covered by the NHS would it not? do you live in England?

Feel free to pm me for any advice. i know a depressingly large amount on this topic and would really like to be able to help you - good luck
