Meningitis

Hi, i probably being paraniod but wondering if any future docs / nurses / other clever people know anything about meningitis. On Sunday I was playing with a young child and today I found out he got taken to hospital yesterday and has meningitis. How does it get passed on? I feel fine, so i presume I am ok. Is there anyway I can carry it though and pass it on to anyone else?
Cheers

it does get passed on, and yes, you can pass it on to other people...go and see your doctor 1st thing tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

You may be offered a course of antibiotics as a profilactic measure but as you had just quite short contact with the child it may not be required. It is up to the doctor to asses if there is any real risk for you. It takes some time to develop symptoms so if you feel fine now it does not mean that you don't have it.

By the way, do you have your Meningitis C vaccine? If not you may discuss it with your GP while you are on it. It is recomended aspecialy to students, living in halls etc. It does not protect from every type of Maningitis but is btter then nothing.

It's quite contagious I think! Got a feeling its passed through air. theres all different types so even if you've had the meningitis C vaccine you can still get the other types. the symptons are very obvious tho, including a rash that doesnt disappear when you press on it with glass, sickness, stiffness in the neck and unable to look at bright light....

you dont always get the rash

you could always get someone to shine a bright light in your face...if you dont like it, its possible you've got meningitis

:hahaha:

My sister had it. It was horrible.

It basically lives in your nose and you can have it for aaages up there but not get symptoms but then other people can get near you and get it straight away.

Basically go to the doc and you'll get this red medicine that turns your pee a funny color. Thats what I had to have. It also gives you the sh its.

All good fun but seriously just go to the doctor.

ITs better to be paranoid and safe. Menegitus is pooey.

Are we talking Rifampin here? It doesn't give runs to everyone but it happens sometimes. Better then having maningitis though. It not only gives funny orange colour to your pee but also saliva and tears. If you are wearing contact lanses don't when taking that stuff or they may pernamently turn orange.

What are the actual chances of me getting it though? Isn't it just close contact? what counts as this? i also was looking in internet and it said there was no extra danger of getting it through third party as you are in contact with it every day (1 in 10 ppl carrying it). so surely that means that no one is in extra danger from being near me? im a bit reluctant to go to GP as i have been a lot recently, for minor things and Im not sure im at risk or a danger to anyone anyway. would nhs direct know?

I think she was being sarcastic and refered to side effects of the profylaxis. Her sister had it and she said it was horrible. I can see you have reasons to take it very personal but I don't think she meant any harm.

are u havin a laugh?? it doesnt matter if youve been to your gp a lot! thats their job. you think u could b carryin a life threatening bug!! go to put your mind and ours at rest.

Yes, they will now and they are going to be able to advice you whether a visit to the GP is required. It is a ery good idea to give them a call.

I'm just not sure if its a bit of an over reaction if 1 in 10 people carry it anyway. This kid will probably have been in contact with loads of people over the last week or so too. the doctors have asked some other people hes been in contact with to go get antibiotics, so if they thought i was at risk then wouldn't they have told me to? Anyway surely i just cant turn up at the doctors with no appointment or anything? I am slightly worried about it, more if i can pass it on to anyone else but i dont want to overreact either.

Ok cheers, will give them a ring in the morning

You can even call them now if you wish. They are staffed 24/7 and I bet at this time they are a bit bored with lack of calls .

A good friend of mine nearly died of Meningitis last year... I can't remember whether it was A, B, or C, but it was horrible to see him waste away so much in just a matter of 2 or 3 days... So got to the doctor ASAP!!

Yeh sorry. Came home from pub found topic I knew something about and sarcasm doesnt come across on internet :frown:

Menegitus isnt cool. I would know that more than anything. My baby ****ing sister was in a coma for like 4 days. And its got serious long term effects.

Hey all,
Thanks for your replies. I got a letter this morning saying all those at risk had already been identified and given antibiotics. It recommended everyone else just be aware of symptoms and carry on as normal. So I feel reassured now!
