Herpes?

My sister has been ill since saturday - on sunday morning her lips and gums were really swollen to the point where she couldn't open her mouth and her throat was sore. Obviously, my mum was quite concerned and took her to the emergency docs. They said she has tonsilitus and thrush in her mouth and gave her some antibiotics and some gel type stuff to rub on her gums/inside her lips. It's not really helped much and I think my mum is going to take her back to the doctors.
Now I have had oral thrush before - caused by inhaled steroids - and to me, it doesn't look like the same thing. For a start, my mouth didn't swell up and my sister also has small ulsers on her tongue and inside her mouth. Plus, mine cleared up quite quickly with treatment.
My sister is 14, she does have a boyfriend but has told my mum that they "don't do anything"! I'm not exactly sure if my mum believes her but I'm thinking she's got some sort of std..... Me and my sis aren't exactly close - so I know she won't open up to me. Also, I had a hospital appointment today and was chatting with my specialist nurse. I was telling her about my sister and she said she might have herpes. I've tried looking for a bit more info on herpes but everything seems to be about genital herpes.
Does anyone have any experience of herpes and know the symptoms? Do you think it's likely my sister might have picked something up?

I highly doubt it.
You may have had those symptoms similar to your sisters but just because her symptoms seem worse than you had it could be how her body is reacting to it, how it is trying to defend it off.
But why on earth have you considered it to be Herpes, If you can't find any information on what shes got that you consider herpes, i'd say its not.

But why on earth have you considered it to be Herpes,
Purely because my nurse suggested it - and it's not clearing up with the meds she's taking for it.

Could be herpes simplex - you get this by swapping bodily fluids e.g. saliva - so its not exactly an STD - I don't think it makes the mouth swell that much - but it does lead to ulcers of the mouth.
