OK I've been predicted BBB and I want to do english literature. I haven't made my firm choices yet but Bath Spa wants BDD and Kent wants 320points inc BB. I know I've been predicted a B but I really don't think I'll get it in English, I reckon I've got a good chance of getting an A and B in my other two subjects, but what would happen if I didn't get a B in english? Would I have to go through clearing?

If the course isn't too over-subscribed, they would probably allow a C. I have the same problem with Creative Writing and my Firm wanting a C in English Literature, which would be impossible as i've mucked up two major units.

Well I think you certainly stand a good chance considering that you're getting such high grades in your other two subjects. I recommend you go for it and work as hard as you can for the B in English, if the courses aren't over-subscribed then they can probably fit you in if you miss the grade.

I was speaking to the lady who's mainly incharge of the admisions for English lit at Kent, anyway I asked her if I got a C in English are they still likely to accept me assuming it's my first choice (this was when I'd completely mucked up two major modules getting Ds in them and B in my coursework)- anyway she said that they would still seriously considering it looking back at my personal statement, references etc and if they weren't too over subscribed they are still likely to make you the offer. Also she said they found that the grades people get at A level dont usually make a big difference of somebody's performance at uni- something I found a little weird but that's what she said.

What she really wanted to emphasise was that they'd rather have somebody who really REALLY wants to go to Kent and is desperate to be at that uni rather than someone who has really good grades and is half hearted about going there ie, someone who gets like ABB (say they miss their AAA firm and AAB insurnance offer and have to go through clearing), so they're more likely to take on u than put your place up for clearing if that makes sense!

Can I just also say (sorry I know this post is getting long now!) that there is always hope for getting the grades you want, like I said I got two Ds in my AS modules in June, and I retook them in January A (full marks ) in one, B in another and re-submited my coursework and got an A. Also got an A in my unit 4 module in January so hopefully I'll be getting an A now and having gone from a D and having lost all faith in English lit let me just tell you from personal experience it can be done!!

Hope this helps XX

What grade do Bath Spa want in English? If they want a B as well, you might have to go through clearing if you get a C, but if you get ABC and they only want BDD, it's pretty likely they'll let you in anyway. As for Kent, it depends how many people accepted their offer and how many others missed the grades, but it's definitely possible they'll let you in anyway. In the meantime, work hard and try and get the B!

Kent are usually pretty good with accepting people who drop a grade - I know a girl who got on to a course requiring ABB with CCD! Granted this was based on a different department and course (Computing) but Computer Science at Kent is still pretty popular. I heard similar stories from those on other courses too, although not usually as extreme!
