Bulimia, but not really...

Hi,

In the past year or so I have developed a habit lately. I throw up a lot if I eat too much. I don't do it all the time. I only do it so often. If I have one too many cookies or have a big chinese buffet I just want to get rid of it. When I get rid of all the sticky, sugary foods I feel this sense of release and satisfaction. It's like I've enjoyed this brilliant meal/snack yet I've not taken in the calories.
I'm rarely left hungry. I never throw up everything that I've eaten - only part of it. And I don't find it absolutely difficult to do so. I've grown used to throwing the food up.

I do feel like I have control over my body and I often drink milk or brush my teeth after to try and cancel out any acid from my stomach.

I'm not overly skinny or anything. I'm 8 1/2 stone and 5ft 4".

Will this cause any health problems? Do I have a real problem?

I think you do have a problem - if your forcibly throwing up your food even if only 'part of it' and gaining satisfaction from this then you do have Bulimia. Many with this eating disorder gorge and high cal foods only to throw it up. You may be a healthy weight for your height but this isn't healthy what your doing to yourself. I'd advise seeing your local GP or talking to your parents about receiving help. Hope this helps hun

Yes, to put it bluntly. No matter how little or often you do it, or when you do it, it can cause serious health problems.

Sweetheart, I'd advise you try to get out of this. I understand the feeling of control, but its not good. It can lead to a lot of health problems, rotting teeth, kidney issues, lack of vitamins...its generally a very very bad route to go down.

Weight isn't so much an issue with bulimia - one of the classifications is that they're generally normal weight, or a tad overweight.

To warn you, don't brush teeth directly after throwing up, as it won't help. You're just brushing the acid into your teeth. Leave it a couple of hours.

Take care of yourself, please. Go to your doctor, and basically say what you have said here.

If you ever want to PM me, thats fine. Look after you. Jo xx

I don't gorge myself on high-cal foods though. I've never binged or anything like that.

You do have a problem. You're probably noticing that you do it more often than you used to, and while you're probably not bad enough to be properly diagnosed with bulimis nervosa yet you might be soon.

Go to your GP, and explain what you've said here. They can organise counselling, which may help. And visit the Eating Disorder's Association webiste.

Like you said your eating food that's sticky and sugary and then partly throwing it up. That's gorging because you believe these foods are bad for you, eat them and then get rid of them.

electrolyte imbalances?
Yeah you shouldnt ever try to inflict harm on your body intentionally and that's what you are doing by making yourself throw up. It's how bulemia starts, by throwing up a bit and gradually it spirals out of control. OK, so you can control it now but eventually it could take over your life. You should do something about it before it's too late. I eat loads of bad foods, but never throw them up even when I feel really bloated and bad for eating so much....

electrolyte imbalances?

the levels of important ions in your body are altered, which can be quite serious.
Electrolyte imbalance - [WebMD]

Electrolytes are minerals found naturally in the body, such as potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium. Electrolytes are needed to keep the body's balance of fluids at the proper level and to maintain normal functions, such as heart rhythm, muscle contraction, and brain function.

If the body's electrolytes are not in proper balance, a person may have seizures, an irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, and other problems. Electrolyte imbalances can be caused by a variety of health conditions, such as chronic heart or kidney disease, endocrine diseases (such as problems with the adrenal, pituitary, thyroid, or parathyroid glands), eating disorders, or bone disorders. Any condition that causes the body to lose too much water (such as diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or taking medications called diuretics) can also lead to an electrolyte imbalance.

Sorry, I should make myself more clear. When you vomit you not only get rid of food you have eaten but also stomach juice. Your body needs to make more of it to replenish the loss. Like with any loads of body fluid it is not only water that is lost but also some important salts (posh name for those is electrolytes). If one vomits regularly body has no time to restore the corect balance of those salts that are lost. Your heart beat depends very much on corect proportions of salts within the body so an imbalance of those can lead to irregularities in heart rythm. It does not happen very often to people suffering from bulimia but when it does happen it can be fatal.
Thats Bulimia. Even though you have "control" and don't feel awful about it, its still a huge problem that could damage your health and escalate out of control.

If you don't want the sugar and the calories, don't eat the food. You can't have it both ways and be safe.
Mmm, I wouldn't say it was bulimia as such - you don't mention high levels of binging or anything - it sounds like bulimirexia to me... But that is still an Eating disorder, and still EXTREMLY dangerous.
Its not healthy making yourself throw up, i knew someone at work once who used to do that alot and it really messed her insides up and she had to have an operation to put it right, she's lucky to be alive to be honest.

Bulimia, bulimirexia ... whatever label we attach to it still needs sorting. It is neither healthy nor desirable to make yourself vomit. I would suggest that you give a serious thought to why do you do it. Is it just becouse it appears to you as a clever and harmless way of eating nice food without worrying about your calories intake? Or is it something more to it, like this feeling of being in control? I am not attempting to analyse you as I do not have the skill and internet forum is not the place but I would like to suggest you go and talk about it with somone you can trust. You are worried about and starting to identify that this behavious may actualy be a problem. It is a good moment to stop before it spiral out of control.
