hi, i run quite regularly and am reaonably fit...so i get on a treadmill today and after 10 minutes my ankles and the bottom of my legs are killing me, so i stop and can literally barely walk i'm in in so much pain...it subsided pretty quickly though....does anybody know what could have caused this? do you think it could happen again?
thanks
What, do you mean your calves? I'm studying exercise physiology atm so if you want a lengthy PM of what to do about this, feel free to PM

Otherwise I think it just sounds like your calf muscles are a bit store. Try stretching those for 30 seconds tonight, and for 30 secs before + after you exercise (as well as your thighs, and other muscles  ).

There are plenty of ways you can do this. For instance you can push out against a wall, stretching one calf muscle at a time.

HTH!

Ok it could be that too. If it's that then I'm not sure, lol - I know a lot about muscles right now, but forgot bones. That was so 2003 :p:

Sorry dudette, perhaps someone else on here will be able to help you then

i went for a run a few weeks ago, and when i got back my calves were killing and i could hardly walk. for me it was basically my calves cramping, and they were so tight i couldnt really bend my legs to walk. Stretching is the only option really, if you do this before and after exercise, then you shouldnt get the pain, or if you do it shouldnt be intense!

Shin splits is where it really reallllly hurts on the front of your legs more than the back.
And lasts for a lot longer too.
no it definitely wasn't shin splints, it was my ankles and bottom of my calves (back of my legs). it was more like a severe ache than cramp... it was weird as i run quite regularly and have never felt this before. it's also definitely not caused my my trainers as i have had them a while and they're proper running shoes. i am going for a run tonight, so will see if it happens again.
i was thinking what could have caused it- maybe that i had been wearing high heels a few days before (although this isn't out of the ordinary for me!), or that i hadn't had much to eat during the day so perhaps a lack of energy/low blood sugar?
danni_bella...i did stretch them before the run, but maybe not properly, i'll make sure i do it well tonight. i never normally stretch very much though- just my quads/hams and shake out my ankles a bit.

it honestly almost felt like i was really heavy and putting too much weight on my lower legs making them ache like hell! (i'm not too heavy though!!)

i'm worried it might be something to do with my arches?!! what do you think?
