What do you think is the best small car?
I like Clios but thats partly cos i'm learning in 1. I want to buy a car within the next month and would like peoples opinions on small cars - I don't like 3 door cars

Although the Saxo is also nice, the Polo is a very safe, economical and good looking car (IMO)

Clio's are cheap. New ones slightly better, but still looks cheap.

Anyway - the best car for quality and looks is blatantly the Polo. But thats also the most costly. For all round affordability, the Corsa would win as it has more instruments than the other lot and it has more speed than the rest of them when comparing size engines.

No, you're getting confused.

A lot of people tend to go by the engine size when this is not important. A 1.4 Renault 5 GT Turbo would easily keep up with a 5.0l Mercedes SL.

The Corsa 1.2 has 75hp.
The VW Polo has 54 or 63hp respectively.
The Clio has 60 or 75hp.
The Saxo also has (I think) around 65hp. (All 1.2l)

So the Clio(75) and Corsa are obviously the fastest (taking into account they are all roughly the same weight).

Normally, all other small cars have to have a 1.4l engine in to match the Corsa's performance. Any more questions and I'll try and respond . . .

The Clio! I like the look of the VW Polo but it is very noisy compared to the Clio and they are a similar price.

Slightly biased because i have one, the Saxo I love it, get about 250-300 miles on £20, can't complain with that! Quite cheap to pick up as well.

It depends how much you want to spend, for less than £500 it would have to bew the Fiesta because they are simple, basic and durable.

For £1000 it would have to a MK3 Polo (i.e 93-2001), Seat Ibiza (94-2001), Ford Fiesta (95-2000), Fiat Punto ELX 75 (94-1999).

£2000 a nice top spec Fiesta (95-2000) or a 98+ Clio.

If I had £5k to spend on any of them it would be the Clio but personaly if I had £5k to spend on a car it would have to be a BMW or Merc or somthing.

Edit the early 106's are not so good in a crash, the later ones are better but are too pricey. Not so sure about Saxo's because like the 106 they are based on an ancient design.

I am biased towards Fords and Fiats because I understand how they work.

What I think Walshie means is that the 1.2 Corsa is the quickest 1.2 around, having nearly 75bhp from a 1.2

Micra's are in many ways good cars they are extremely durable but insurance is expensive because they are fairly hard to repair in a minor accident.

The MK4 (95) Fiesta was designed to be easy to repair in an ancident as a result you can get very cheap insurance of them.

I have always found the Fiesta and Puntos to feel much bigger than they are where as 106s, Saxos and Micras all feel like they are small car.

Corsa's would be ok if the gearbox was better, the newer Corsa's have much better gearboxes but for the money I would rather have a Clio.

Edit on the subject of Clios the 1.2 I drove was faster than the 1.4 Corsa B and it was cheaper to insure

The 206/207 should have been in that list too i believe, same with the Seat Ibiza, the Ford Fiesta, the Toyota Yaris, the Citroen C2, Fiat Punto...I've probably missed out a shed load as well. The best thing to do IMO is find a guide on great first cars, you could probably find one in the times online's motoring section, or channel 4's.

Earlier corsas had 45 bhp from the 1.2. So depends on what model year we're talking about. Punto 1.2 8v could be 60 or 73 (spi vs. mpi), punto 1.2 16v was 86bhp, Mk1 throughout.

1.4 16v clio is 100 bhp, Corsa 1.4 16v is 88 bhp.

The 1.2 16V in the Corsa C is 75BHP, although the newer Twinport ones in the facelift cars (54 onwards) is 80BHP. My 1.0 Corsa is 65BHP.
