Where did you go/are you going for work experience?

I've got my work experience one week after we come back after the holidays and I was curious as to where everyone went for theirs. It seems as though the majority of people are going back to their primary schools and the rest are doing shop work. I seem to be the only one going to a secondary school.

So where did you go for work experience, and did you enjoy it?

It was awesome.

I went to a school for children with special need. Some were disabled and most were autistic. I was in the occupational therapy part. It was great, the kids and staff were fab and I learned a lot

Secondary school sounds like fun! What exactly are you going to be doing?

I went to a hospital for my one - my dad's doctor friend arranged it for me. It was mostly office work though, as being a minor I wasn't really allowed to go near patients and stuff. But I was allowed to go into the clinic one time, and that was great. I actually got to see some nurses and paitents, lol

So many of my friends went back to their primary schools too. For one school in my borough there were 14 girls there for work experience at once... rather ridiculous, really.

Wherever you go, I'm sure you'll have fun. I've yet to hear from anyone who didn't enjoy their work experience, because it's so distinctly different from the school life we're used to.

Wow, so you both enjoyed it a lot?

I'm looking forward to it quite a bit, although I've been warned that secondary school kids might be a bit of a challenge to work with, considering I'm only in Year 10 myself and about 5 ft 4! Ha, I doubt they'll listen to me..

Anyway, I was most half dreading the whole process of them assigning a teacher to come check up on you. The way they did it was by putting up a list of the whole of my year in the staffroom and teachers just picked people they wanted to visit..aughh I could just picture my name with a blank space next to it! Luckily my French teacher offered to me visit me.

Newcastle Primary Care Trust.

The work was rather dull but what can you expect from a five day work experience? I did enjoy it overall though and learnt that office workers keep the coffee industry in business.

I'm teaching PE to small groups- athletics and rounders hopefully, granted the weather improves soon! A hospital sounds interesting, although it's a shame it obviously can't be more hands on.

I know what you mean about the primary school situation- so many people wanted to go back, but they tried to discourage us from going to our old schools because it might not be as realistic an experience as you probably already know most of the teachers, and people mainly go back for nostalgia anyway.

Our English teacher told us we'd be doing an oral on our work experiences, simply because they are quite easy to talk about, and everyone else finds them so interesting- it seems noone has a terrible time, and even those who found it less enjoyable manage to make interesting orals usually.

I'm doing my first week in a design studio with people who do corporate identities, advertising, other graphic media etc for other companies, and my second week is going to be with an accountant.

Really looking forward to the first week, not sure what to expect for the second.
I did mine like two years ago, I was the only person who did it at a secondary school. I worked in the technician's prep labs, where they store all the chemicals and equipments for science lessons, I got to prepare experiments for all the teachers, carry out maintanance, handle all the dangerous chemicals that students aren't allowed to touch, and by the end of the day there was no work left, so I was allowed to play around with stuff . Hehe, it was such a great day.

Unfortunately, loads of people in the year below heard about my WE and wanted to do it next year, so they didn't get as much fun as I did, as there were loads of them.

I did mine in a crown court, although most of it was sitting in court rooms with the ushers and clerks just watching.

Did you ever see the students? Because everyone wishing me luck is making me a tad nervous, and I'd be interested to know how they reacted to you.
Well, I had to wander in and out of classes occasionally, to set up or dismantle equipment, or in one instance to run a practical. At lunch time i was offered the science office/lounge or the staff room to eat my lunch, but I decided to go outside onto the field, and chat to some people.

When I was in the classrooms, most people thought it was cool and just said hi or asked me questions, although one class made fun of me, but they were a bottom set year 8 class who all the teacher's hate lol. Most people were just interested as to why I was wearing a lab coat lol.

(Another bonus of working with the techies was that I got to hear them gossip all about the science teachers, which was especially funny when they were slagging off the teacher that all the students dislike )

Oh good. Just people are starting to worry me with all of this: "Secondary school? Good luck!" talk..

I'm sure it won't be that bad.. especially if I have to actively take part in the rounders, and they'll hopefully be able to sympathise with me/find it comical when they see my poor catching skills.
Ill be doing mine at a local dentist in June. Looking foward to it.

all your WE look really fun compared to mine. Im going to the dentists for 1 wk, the GPs for two wks and the University of Bham economics department for 1 wk. Im still trying to get a WE placement at a hospital but Ive been constantly contacting this man that I think he is becoming to find me really annoying. I absolutely hate the calls because you constantly get passed around different people in a department and have to constantly repeat what you say "I am a year 11 student from... i am phoning to ask whether you offer WE" that at the end of the call I would get soooo bored and begin to talk absolute nonsense and even saying the wrong age and name. :p:

I sympathise- I don't like talking on the phone even normally, but we had to for work experience.

I ended up having to phone about seven times literally, and finally when I got through to an actual person (rather than the answering machine) they told me they weren't offering work experience, despite Trident having arranged all of it and everything. Turned out there had been a mix up and I had to phone again..augh..

I made a complete tit of myself on the answerphone too by saying: "You're obviously not there at the moment.." which must be the least intelligent thing to say in that position.. :p:
