I'm there this year so I'll give you a rundown! CHH, like Manor and Goldney, is based in Clifton, which is about a 10 minute walk to the university buildings, maybe a bit more of less depending on where you're based. It's a 5 minute walk to the student Union building, and I find is generally well situated for most things. You'll also find people walk into Broadmead (shopping place) and to nightclubs, because they're also reasonably close (20 minute walk). Its location is the main reason why I chose the hall, and I don't regret it one bit.

The hall is split into Old Clifton/Callender (spelt wrong), Fry Wing, and South Wing. The Old Clifton part of the hall is in a lovely, listed building. All the rooms are quite big and unique, but the entire area is all girls. It's known for being very quiet, but the rooms are pretty cool and all the people I know that are there seem happy - sometimes it can be good to be in a quiet bit of the hall, you need to sleep/work occasionally! Then there's Fry Wing, which was stuck onto the rest of the building in the 60's. This is more typical student accommodation. The rooms are a reasonable size, corridors are all mixed with shared baths/sinks/showers. This part makes up the majority of the hall and tends to be the most sociable. Then there's South Wing, where I live. This was stuck onto Fry Wing in the 70's (sounding beautiful I know) and consists of 2 boys corridors, a mixed corridor, and an all girls corridor (where I am). The rooms are the smallest in hall but they all have sinks, which is pretty cool when dying of thirst in the night/in embarrassing pyjamas which you don't want to be seen in when going to brush your teeth. To me that makes up for the lack of space. It's again quite sociable but a little quieter than Fry in general.
Everyone in hall gets to keep their room in the holidays, which believe me is an enormous advantage and saves so much hassle with emptying rooms at the end of each term.

The food is brilliant in my opinion, but then I'm not a fussy eater at all. Still, we have proper caterers and it's supposed to be the best food of all the catered halls. We get lots of choice (and a salad bar if you don't want any of the options), and huge portions including great puddings. The bar is nice and cheap, as are all the hall bars, but not really that nice looking and sometimes a bit dead. However, there's always something going on, somewhere! If you read the rulebook is seems ridiculously strict, but while it's true the Warden detests binge drinking, all rules are generally ignored. Security are good at shutting down parties, but they're usually pretty understanding, and if you're ever trying to sleep/work you can just ring them up and within minutes they'll have stopped the idiot below you from playing his music/singing drunkenly. If you're the cause of the noise you can usually still continue drinking as long as you're aren't totally unreasonable.

CHH is great for musical/dramatic people as we have lots of music practice rooms and put on several plays/musicals each year. It's also pretty homely and we have 2 hall cats: one is evil and one is a sweetie and regularly sleeps on my bed!

Hope that all helps, I would definitely recommend CHH simply because it's the only catered hall anywhere near uni, and I've had a good time here.

Thank you!

It sounds really cool, actually. Do you get to choose which wing you want to be in on your application form? Think I'll probably be applying here. Was considering Wills but have a feeling that, with the distance, I would be unlikely to make it to any lectures...

Wills is far prettier I'd say, but it was the distance thing that swung it for me! You don't get to choose your wing on your application form, just if you want mixed or single sex. However, I put mixed and ended up in all girls, as did quite a lot of girls I've spoken to! If you really hate your corridor when you get there you can easily move, but I doubt you will .

Ah well, I'd choose location over prettiness any day! I want somewhere with a musical tradition as well. And for someone with my appetite, quality of food is also a major factor. Decisions, decisions...
