Belly piercing problems......

I got my belly pierced about a year ago and a bit ago and am still having problems. I look after it well but every month or so the bottom hole inside my navel splits a little and some what looks like subcutaneous tissue comes out a bit, it looks disgusting and hurts a little with a little bit of blood. :frown: After a day or two it heals up and is fine, until the next month.. i was just wondering is this weird?? or does it need more time to heal properly..
And also im seriously considering taking the bar out and letting it heal, i just wondered if anyone has done this, and is there a big scar? and does the top of ur belly button sag/collapse?
any comments welcome thanks x

Weird I pierced mine like three years ago and I just started having problems. I think it's because I didn't change my belly bar often enough and it started to get a bit rusty. Your belly button piercing is the most likely to get infected...I recommend taking it out for a while and using some anticeptic but not longer than 2/3 days or itll close up. Maybe in your case if it gets continually infected you should just let yours heal and take your ring/belly bar out permanently. You wouldn't be left with a scar, don't worry. Do you have any other piercings...and have they been problematic or is it just your belly button?

Well funny u shud say that, I did have problems with my ear piercings when i first had them done and had to let them heal, they just wouldnt stop weeping and healing up and i wasnt that young, but i had them done again a couple of years later and they are ok now. Well i mite hang in there for another couple of months and see if it still keeps happening i mite just let it heal if no scarring.
Thanku x

If you had problems with your ears it means that you have sensative skin that can't heal as easily as some people, so it wasn't a great idea to pierce your belly button. Before I had mine done they asked me whether I had any problems post ear piercing because there is such a high risk of infection/permanent complications. I think you should take it out because it sounds like it never properly healed since you first got it and it's not good to have a constant infection. Good luck!

My friend had hers done, and that happened to her but she reckons now that its healed over, hers was like that for about a yr as well.

What kind of jewellery do you have in? How are you caring for it? Do you touch it/play with it/mess with it often? Obviously if yes, then stop that.

You should be caring for it with sea salt soaks, nothing else is needed. And a titanium barbell that fits well and isn't too long is the best jewellery to have.

You're probably best off having a piercer (a good, reputable one..) look at it.

Oh, and if you think it's infected, don't take it out.

That is crazy. Use good quality titanium jewellery, and it will not rust or similar. You don't need to change it, and you should avoid changing it for as long as possible.

Your belly button piercing is the most likely to get infected...I recommend taking it out for a while and using some anticeptic but not longer than 2/3 days or itll close up.

Also crazy. If it hasn't healed, it will close up in a few hours, not days. And by trying to force the bar through the hole you'll do more damage. You need a good quality titanium bar, with no dangly bits or sharp ends, and then just leave it in!

To the OP: Are you doing anything every month when it flares up? Like sports, cleaning your room, even your period? If so, they may be aggravating it. I'd recommend going to a good piercer, and getting them to check that the bar is the right length, and dons't have any sharp or dangly bits. It should also be made out of titanium. At this stage, you should not be using bars purchased from anywhere other than a reputable piercer, and they must be made of titanium.

If you do take it out, there will be some scarring, but it shouldn't be too bad. Mine feels kinda squishy and hollow if you poke it, but nobody really pokes it! And you can get it repierced later if it has had sufficient time to heal.

Yeah its funnily enough when im on my period, must be hormonal changes, i dont mess with it and ive got a well fitted titanium bar checked by a reputable piercer in.

The only way i care for it is to bathe with solution of sea salt as my piercer advised. I only had problems with my ears the first time and not the second and thought this was only coz the first time the jeweller didnt seem to know what she was doing..

Why's that???
If you go to a piercer (not neccessarily the one where you got it pierced) they'll be able to tell you what it is that's up, whether it's the bar you've got in (as mentioned already, titanium is the best), or if it's how you're cleaning it etc. Chances are it could be more than one thing upsetting it!
Heya, I got mine done on a whim...BIG mistake, it was mank and ***! I took it out after about a year and ahalf and i have a huge mank scar! Its bot too noticable 2 yrs ater taking it out but for the first 6 months or so it was horrible!
If you do take it out take it out in the winter so you know you wont hae to sho your tummy!!

Ity could be hormonal changes, but just also check you're not bending in a weird position whilst inserting tampons or something like that! Or do you use a hot water bottle, coz that would be right on top and might upset it?

The hole will start to close from the outside in, meaning that if there is an infection it would get trapped and could lead to an abcess or something.
hey, ive had mine done for nearly four years now and have never had any problems with it since it healed. However, when it was healing i think it got a bit infected but i used ear piercing solution on it and also savlon, and it soon healed up. But the fact that yours hasnt healed suggests you have some sort of reaction to the belly bar, whether it's the piercing or the bar however i dont know. DONT take it out for ages because as others have said, it will close up and be really painful trying to put the bar back in. Have you tried a more expensive bar? Could just be you need a richer metal....If you take it out it MIGHT leave a scar but it depends how infected it is and how it looks at the moment. Someone at my school got hers really badly infected and had to take the bar out, and she ended up with the most horrific scar!! So be really careful in choosing what you do, and perhaps check with a qualified piercer...
Mine was absolutely disgusting for the first six months, it would not heal, it was very painful and had this lump of some red stuff hanging out of the bottom hole which really did hurt!

I bought some of those gauze plasters (big square white ones) and popped them on whilst wearing clothes with some spray, then eventually it cleared up and haven't had a problem since.
