With the merger with UMIST I would say Manchester will be the best. Personaly though I would go for which city you like the best, which one would you rather spend 3 years at?

I had exactly the same choice for Comp Sci. At the end of the day there isn't that much in it academically so for me it came down to which one I thought I would be happiest at and where I thought I would have the best time. I have decided upon Manchester because in my opinion its the best city in the country and is perfect for student life. Notts is good also but there is a down side to living there (high crime rate etc..). Plus with the merger with UMIST, Manchester reputation and resources are set to rocket.

I think you should pick wherever you will feel the most comfortable though!!!

I'm a Notts medic, and know quite a few pharmacists. All I can say is the course here is very industrially based (mainly due to Boots) in comparison to other courses elsewhere.

I have lived near Manc all my life but went to Nott uni and both cities are great for shopping and night life etc but Nottingham has a great campus which I don't think you get at Manchester, it seems all spread out. Also Nott now has new trams and Manchester's are 'orrible !
But your best picking the one which has the best pharmacy course.

The Bus is by far the best way to get around in Manchester. If you're a student the bus pass is £3 a week and the buses are every two seconds, providing you live down Oxford/Wilmslow Road. I am not on that route, I live a bit further out, however the buses are every two minutes even in the none student area. In Manchester public transport rules. There is honestly no need to have a car in Manchester.

Um, the crime rate in Manchester is considerably higher than in Nottingham.

Not per capita, the crime rate is high in Manchester because Greater Manchester police is the second largest per capita in the UK.

Funily enough the London has the highest crime yets for that exact reason.

That doesn't make any sense. You seem to be saying that Manchester has less crime per capita because they've got more police? Is that what you meant to say?

I'm going by the figures on upmystreet.com as linked to by andy 'nottingham is a crime ridden dump, but i still choose to live here' reid.

one of the few places that is, mr reid will be excited to hear

there isnt much between the two unis, nottingham edges it on rep but even i would admit manchester is a great up and coming uni which is why i had it as my insurance, best advice is to go to open days of the two unis and see which one you prefer, notts is a campus uni which you may or may not like whilst machester is in the city center (?) no chance of green there. manchester is probably better clubbing wise but also has a higher crime rate if that sort of thing really bothers you

i dont know what rep is like for pharmacy but as joy already said notts is the home of boots so i guess that is a good start

either of themw would be great

Regards the crime debate... all I can add is that in half a year living in Manchester I've not felt threated once.

I would say what I always say, it's not really correct to go "Ah manchester has so many violent crimes per capita. It must be nothing but 10 square miles of crackhouses." There are rough parts of Manchester and extremely high standard areas of Manchester. Nobody goes to Manhatten and says "Yeah this is a shithole, because x people get shot everyday miles away in the Bronx." I also always say, use your common sense and you'll be fine.

Exactly I've lived here 21 years and not been the vicitim of a crime once.

As regards to my point about the poilice, Greater Manchester has the second largest police force because its the second largest county in terms of population in the UK.

There are rough parts of Manhester but you just avoid the places like a plague, the areas that are worth visiiting or living in are fine.

You say there's no chance of green in Manchester. From what I've seen, one of the greatest things about Manchester Uni is that it is a campus within the city centre. Everything is within a few miles of each other including the accommodation and the buses are crazily regular. I haven't visited the accommodation yet but when my girlfriend went, she said that fallowield reminded her of a small centre parks (but with less huge trees). There are loads of green areas and everything is in the one place. Can't wait to go in September. Probably going to put Oak House as my first choice for accommodation - cheap but in the great area of Fallowfield. Did anyone stay in Oak house/know anything about it they want to share with me??

I know a few residents of Oak House and they have all assured me that I wouldnt regret picking it as my accomodation. They say that the rooms are ALL very good (ethernet connections are supposed to be very fast if your bothered about that). The stuff in the kitchens (cooker, fridge etc..) are supoosed to be good as well. Your also only a little walk from the sporty section of Fallowfield which is good for gym freaks like me!!!

Green? If you want countryside take the 86 Booth St, (outside the business school) and go to Chorlton. Head for a place called Ivygreen or Chorlton meadows and there is miles countryside. This is just 20 minutes away from the university by bus.

Of course the Mesery Valley also borders Didsbury as well.

As I've said before, i really think it's important to consider which course will suit YOU best.

As far as the uni's are concerned, they both have good reps - It really makes no difference where they feature in league tables etc.

Both cities (I live in Manc) have their ads and disads.

Notts is campus based, on outskirts of city (10 mins bus), whilst Manchester central and less of a true campus. Both have dodgy areas, and I would say student areas in Manc worse than those in Notts.

As far as social life is concerned, both are great - more clubs in Manchester, but I prefer the 'bars' of Nottingham.

Think about how far from home you want to live?
Do both guarantee accommo to 1st years?
Pharmacists at Notts spend quite a lot of time in lectures with medics in 1st year. Therefore spend some of their time in medschool, and some in pharmacy on the main campus.

Academically, both depts get excellent ratings for teaching, and top ratings for research (Manchester 5*, Nottingham 5). The only big difference is that Nottingham students have a slightly higher a-level score (average 28.4 pts) than Manchester students (average 24.3 pts). The pharmacy dept. at Nottingham also has some funky new buildings.
