Journalism, with these offers which should I go to?

Poll

Which Uni should D_J go to for Journalism?

Hey everyone, I'm going for Journalism, surprise surprise, and I still really don't know which of these to put as my first choice, they all have the same offer (BBB) except Sunderland which is 180 points (DDD) and I would say I'm fairly likely to get ABC in the end so what do you all think?

I don't know much about undergraduate journalism courses, but I want to go into journalism eventually, and I've heard that the UCLAN course is excellent

None are particularly outstanding IMO, but go for Sheffield.
i know sunderlands not rated overly highly as a uni but i know its gaining a good reputation for certain courses with journalism being one of them. a friend of mine recently went to visit and she said the journalism facilities are excellent especially for those interested in radio and tv journalism.

I've heard good things about UCLANs postgrad course but not sure about undergrad. Sheffields undergrad is meant to be good I think. One of those two I reckon.

Have a look here : http://www.nctj.com/courses_full.php?coursecatid=4&PHPSESSID=134d6824383c281e12b629379d87b51c
Sheffield is the best overall University, but Bournemouth is best for the media industry.

I'd say Sheffield, best reputation as far as I've heard.
Bournemouth's media school is one of the best in the country so shouldn't be disregarded. Have a look at the courses in detail and decide which one interests you the most. Your opinion of the course and department is far more important than just going to a university for its overall reputation (i.e. Sheffield).

I applied for UCLAN, but they couldnt offer me Journalism and instead they offered me this Combined Honours.

When you put Sheffield, Im guessing its Uni Of Sheffield and not Hallam? Ive heard good things about UCLAN.

Did you apply at Huddersfield? Ive got a conditional there for Media/Sports Journalism

I looked into a lot of these when I was applying....

UCLan is a very big uni kinda quite spread out over Preston...they have a good reputation....they'll tell you that enough flipping times at the open day! I kinda got sick of hearing about it! The facilities are ok (from what I saw) It's probably good if you're into multi-media Journalism...the students I spoke to didn't seem to use them much though!

Sheffield I didn't apply to, but I wish I had!! (I didn't think I'd get BBB...and then guess what I ended up with. Gr! lol) They're good for print based Journalism apparently and are a quite well respected Uni.

Bournemouth I've heard good things about..

Sunderland I applied to, for Journalism and English...unsurprisingly I got an offer, even though I didn't even mention my desire to study English in my personal statement! If you think you can get ABC then don't accept somewhere with a DDD offer. Well, I wouldn't anyway.
Have you looked at the course content? Does it fit with the type of journalism you want to do?

Yeah Sheffield Uni, I didn't do Huddersfield no, my other two were Staffordshire and Cardiff. Cardiff have changed the name of their course now, its basically media studies, which I didn't realise. You people who say none of them sound good, if none of these sound good then where should I have applied for Journalism, pretty sure Bournemouth, Sheffield and UCLAN are the best.

As for Staffordshire, they messed me about a bit basically, here's a nice story for you. I got an interview so thought great that sounds good, got everything ready 'There will be a short written test' it said...ok then thats fine by me. Went down there, got there early and everything then they took us around the uni a bit, which to be honest is very small and not THAT impressive, but anyway. Then they took us into the broadcast room, which is coupled with a computer suite, which I found kind of odd, and did this test.
Fairly straightforward b/s really, who is the Foreign secretary random stuff like that, then proof read some passage, then re-write the passage as a N.I.B (thats News In Brief...not the Black Sabbath track) which is about 50 words or something.
Then they started doing interviews...time ticked away and away and I wasnt called, it got to 3pm (by this time they'd been doing interviews for an hour and a half while we 'played' on the internet, their wordnot mine) and I realised "oh crap, i have to get a train in 40 minutes...i'll have to get someone and do it now"
Time still ticked away and noone appeared...and sure enough 5 minutes before my train someone came and I said "Yeah i've kinda gotta go..." "When?" "Pretty much now" "ok u'd better come upstairs" "urm...ok then"

So we ran upstairs to talk to the head of the course and we agreed to do it over the phone, to which i replied "great can I go now??" "Sure what time's your train?" "3:44" "ok you've got one minute"

So i sprinted across the building, down, and across the road (the one good thing about the place is its so small and the journalism building is just down the road). Ran into the station and onto the platform to find...no train. I look up at the board and sure enough "This train is delayed by 9 minutes"

The aftermath of this was, although they said they would email me, I had to email them twice and didn't get a response. Then once during lunch at school they called me unknowingly so my voicemail said "I'm calling to rearrange your Journalism interview". This was a good month or so after, but then a second later they called back saying "Ignore that last message I see you've already had one, I will chase up your offer" And I was like...pretty sure I haven't had an interview but I don't care, I don't want to go there anyway!

So there you have it!

By the way I want to do Magazine Journalism in the long run and Sunderland is the only Uni in the country which does the NCTJ accreditation for Magazine as well as print so that's why i'm not disregarding it. Also I really like the place, compared to Sheffield they were all very nice, no disrespect to anyone who lives there btw. Sorry about the essay!

Talk about a run around!

I applied for Staffordshire, but on my UCAS it said, it had been withdrawn by me. But Im not bothered, never wanted to go there anyway and it seems I made a good choice from your visit!

BTW, check out the Journalism thread on Careers I think it is, which has some decent information on a career in Journalism. :-)

The poll says it all. Sheffield has the best reputation, and the best employment prospects from what I've heard.
It's also a far nicer place imo.
Sheffield all the way. Sheffield Sheffield Sheffield.

Man. I can't believe staffordshire!
I applied to Winchester, Sunderland, Chester, UCLan x 2 and Staffordshire and got offers from all of them without interviews or anything. They must have changed it this year!
I'd like to do post-grad at Sheffield...hopefully that'll work out

Would they be conditional offers? As far as other applicants have told me you can get conditionals without an interview but unconditionals tend to require an interview.

Yah those were conditional
