Mondeos why are so they cheap?

I have noticed that N/P reg Mondoes go for silly money, they have good engines and good chasis, they don't rust and are relialble so why are they so cheap? Is it just because the market is flooded with them?

I have noticed that the bigger the car the less they are worth on the used market, I noticed a P reg BMW 750i for £5000 the other day for example.

Yer my mate is trying to sell a Modeo atm for £250, it's a R reg i think, quite wrecked though

look how cheap second hand rover 75s are..
Mondeos and Vectras get flooded due to Ford's (edit: and vauxhall's!) extra nice company/lease/hire prices which means that it is a number one choice for most companies.

They're boring both in terms of image and driving and are common as muck, all this creates a low second hand value. Then again, most larger and older cars are worth little since there's no demand. Most people who can afford a large car's running costs can afford a newer car, people that can't buy smaller cars. There are of course exceptions.

An R Mondeo would typicaly cost around £600-£800, a £250 will be wrecked.

I wonder my much my dad would get for his Eacort.

There is a minor dent in the rear bumper and tailgate (which is not an MOT issue), there is a problem with the rear suspension and an ECU problem.

It has 92K on the clock but I am thinking if he could get £200 for it then buy a Mondeo for £400 it might be better than getting the Escort fixed.

Well for my dad insurance is not an issue, he does about 60 miles a week so fuel econemey is not that important either.

I guess the rule is never buy a new larger car:biggrin:

Reason why they're cheap is everyone perceives them as being huge so difficult to park, having next to no credibility and being not suitable for young drivers- hence crap like shoe box fiestas are popular.

if you want a mondeo you should be able to get a mark2- 96 P to 00X one. In terms of trim look for zetec, zetec-s (comes with RS appearance pack (RSAP- a bodykit)), ghia or ghia x (top spec, leather, cruise, cd multichanger, heated seats etc). Wouldn't bother with an LX tbh as not much more money gets you a load of toys.

Also try to forget the mantra that less milage = better. A lot of mondeos spend their lives up and down the motorway with one person in them. I'd much rather one of these instead of one which has been used round town for the school run.

Best bet is a ghia x with the 2l petrol in it really. Might be hard to find (a lot of them have the 2.5v6 as it wasn't much more new- remember the ghia x spec is around £20k with the 2l and £20500 with the v6 so theres more with the v6 out there). I'm looking around myself at mondeos now (will be driving a fair few motorway miles after uni- mark 3s with zetec or higher spec and either the 2l petrol or 2l tdci130 derv engine for about £4-5k hopefully).

If you go for a v6 one make sure its got a changed water pump, early mk2 v6's had a plastic impellor one which would break with disasterous circumstances :frown:

Hope this helps.

Well the budget will be £500 max so we can't afford to picky. I agree on milleage it really isn't an issue providing it has been serviced properly.

Zetecs can do 200,000 miles with no real problems so 120k on a 10 year one is nothing. My neighbour has had an N reg one for the last 5 years and has little problems with it.

The only concern I have is parking because we live in the city and have no off road parking, The Punto was a lot easier than the Escort despite the lack of power steering.

The Rover 600 might be worth considering too. The early Vectras were awful so I think we will be avoiding that.

They're so cheap and depreciate so much because the market is flooded with them and they are nothing special, simple as that really!

Got my "L" Mondeo 3 months ago for £550, a few probs with wiring being difficult and a starter going but it runs good now

Loads of companies have Mondeos etc for company cars so they get sold on after 4 years or whatever.

And they're such awful, funny little cars anyway, you'd be better of on a bicycle or a pogo-stick.

Mondeo's are cheap as they are a pile of ****! They are unreliable and rust as do the vectra's. The rover 600 is ok but bewarned the head gaskets are prone to going and in certain models it requires the engine out to do it. Your best bet is to get an old vw passat or audi 80,90,100 or coupe as it will last a lot longer than any ford!

In a year or two, the old Ford Focus will be as cheap as the Mondeo. It's certainly as common...

ahh. A VAG fan.

Audi 80/90/100/coupes are FAR older designs than a mk2 mondeo. First A4 was what, hmm, M/N plate? Mark 2 mondeos were a 96 P. A quick autotrader search shows 2 sub £1k passats around here, 1 a 93 and 1 a 94 reg. For a mondeo you're looking at 96/97 cars really for that much (one or two 98s too).

Build quality etc on a ford mondeo now (mk3) is as good as a passat. Also the tdci130 ford engine is a far superior engine (chain driven and a wider power band) than the pd130 vag unit. Mondeo also handles better than the passat (the passat tends to float along with less feeling through the steering when on backroads, better on the motorway though). Unreliable? Ford are one of the least called out manufacturers according to the ADAC. Although old fords (sierras etc) had a tendancy to rust pretty badly that was pretty much sorted with the mk2 which is a good car.

Rover 600/vectras aren't too great cars though, the 620ti is probably the only 600 i'd consider and well, the vectras look good but its a shame they're not overall good (especially considering the cavalier wasn't a bad car).

Strauss- why are they 'awful, funny little cars'? Care to back that up with reasoning?

At this price bracket a mondeo really seems the best choice for AT82.

edit- not sure about the focus. Looking at the prices of focii versus those of mondeos (98/99/00/+) cars the focus is usually more expensive- e.g. £4k for a 2000 focus versus £4k for a 2001 mondeo.

There is nothing wrong with the Mondeo's reliability if you get a good one and because there are so many around that is not hard.

Even the Mondeo MK1 dosn't really rust that much, you see plenty of 13 year old examples with little rust.

Ynox the depecriation thing is what makes Fords so good to buy second hand, my dad paid £1600 for his car four years and it came with all the electrics, a modern Zetec engine etc. Ok it is no 306 when it comes to driving it but it is quiet and spacius.

At the time £1600 would have just about bought us a rusted 150k MK3 Golf. Some how out of the two I think the Ford had the most life in it.

Also if Ford were truly awful how can they have been constantly at the top of the sales chart? The Focus is also now the best selling car in the world over taking the Cororola and Lada Riva.

The Focus will always hold their value because they have great gavinised bodies which don't rust, early gremlins of the Zetec engines have been sorted and the chassis is simply class leading.

The MK2 Mondoes are extremely good cars for the money, the ride is so smooth yet you can through them into corners and you won't get into trouble.

Thats not strictly true. There are ancient VWs etc that are still made in certain parts of the world

But yeah, the Mondeo is a bloody good buy. And as with any car, if you find a good one and look after it, it'll go for aages.
